1989 Toyota 22r 32/36 weber problems. Help!

So here's the deal guys. I have a 89 toyota pickup with the 22r and here recently I decided to put the weber 32/36 carb on it. After it was installed I took it out for a test drive to see how much it needed to be adjusted. It would diesel when I turned it off so I screwed with the idle mixture screw and it seemed to stop.. But I followed the weber specs for tunning and now when I take off in first it feels like it has great power when I shift into second it seems to cut back a little but right when I shift into third it starts to bog and hesitate but eventually picks up after a little and the same with fourth. I was hoping one of you guys might have had a similar problem and could help. Maybe to lean or rich?? It also backfires when I come to a stop when it's still in gear and I think I can hear a underlining backfire when I'm driving..the only other mod I have is a flow master exhaust, new plugs and recent tune up. Please let me know if you can help! Thanks

Do you have a fuel pressure regulator installed as well?

Sounds like you might. I never had this happen on my pickup, but I didn't run it without a regulator very much. I did exprerience similar symptoms on an old Dodge D50(Mitsubishi Mighty Max), and the solution was a fuel pressure regulator and blocking off the fuel return line that goes from the pump to the tank.
