1989 pickup replacing rear main seal

i have an 89 pickup, v6, 4wd, 3.0 efi. I am trying to replace the rear main seal and I am having trouble getting the two lower studs that connect the oil pan to the backing plate out! the studs will not come out.

Usually you put on two nuts and put your wrench on the first one you put on to back out the stud. Is that not working?
