1988 Toyota Pickup ECU Question
I have a 1988 Toyota Pickup 4x4 with a 2.4re motor and a five speed trans. I am trying to find a ecu for it but not for sure whatr one I need. Part of the numbers are rubbed of the cover. Does anyone know what the right one i need is or where i can find out what the right one is.

any ECU out of an 84-94 Pickup will work
most 84 (any 84 without a vacuum advance distributor), and all 85 Celica ECUs will work too.
Auto and manual ECUs will both work with a 5-speed.

it's not necessarily true that any ecu would work.
what about the ecu's for auto's which had the trans ecu integrated?
what about the difference between peak-and-hold and saturated injectors?
what about the difference between the ecu's on 22r and 22re engines?

As for the integrated auto ECU, was there ever a 22RE with an integrated transmission ECU?
And as for the injectors, AFIAK, the injectors were all the same, but feel free to prove me wrong.

and on another note, when I was having issues with my 88 a year or so ago, during the troubleshooting process I found a dismantler willing to let me try out parts... and I found out the ECU from one particular 91 wouldn't plug in to my 88... literally wouldn't plug in- the plugs were different but another 91 on the lot had an ECU that would plug in... didn't fix the problem though.

In the trucks, all 22r's should be electronic ignition and have vacuum advance / retard. All the vacuum unit does is move the pick-up plate.

i know this thread is old but figure id shine light on injector differences. 82-87 have the same plug and same resistance 3.5ohms so those ecus will work together.88 is a yr of its own it uses 89-95 injector plugs but uses close to the 82-87 resistance 10ohms but is still higher. 89-95 have high rsistance injectors 13.5ohms so not all 22re ecus will work in place of each other
