1988 22re pickup hot start issue

I have a 1988 std cab 22re 4x4 that has an annoying hot start problem. it will start fine in the morning to go to work. But after sitting in the sun all day, ill go to start it after work and it will crank and crank. and when it finally does start it will stumble for a second or two. and sometimes it smells like gas. kind of like it was flooded or something. I don't know if its related or not, but it has a very small, random miss at idle, but it misses pretty bad if I'm sitting and hold it at about 2k. any ideas?

Well, check your fuel pressure regulator and VSV. Make sure their working properly. The VSV will supply vacuum to the fuel pressure regulator to up the pressure to help with hot starts.

The misfire at 2k would lead me to do a wire pull test. When the yota is running pull spark plug wires one by one to see if one you have spark and two their is any changes in the idle.(you might get shocked a little) For example if you pull #3 and there is spark but no change in the way it runs then that tells you it could be the injector or wiring to the injector.
I've been chasing this issue as well I had a miss and no hot start, my miss was a wire issue but still trying to find my hot start issue.

so, look at the tread and post dates before offering advice on the problem. no problem bringing up an old thread to confirm or disprove information in the thread, though.
