Hey guys, google is completely useless for me on this, and my haynes manual sucks even more. My rear window is stuck down in my 87 toyota 4runner sr5 22re (sucks becuase it's cold and rainy), and I'm not getting any power to the rear of the truck. I located the problem to when somebody (not mentioning any names) was drilling a hole for push pin hood latches, and about two inches in from the drivers side headlight, they pierced this REALLY thick white 12v + wire, which shorted out. From the looks of it, all the fusible links are totally fine, and the fuses on the fuse block in the drivers kick panel are fine, and the interior console switches are fine. I've been told there is a relay, but have yet to find it. Dad and I taped up the wire, as it only nicked it, but obviously something (fuse or breaker or fusible link, etc) has been blown. Anybody out there with 1st generation 4Runner experience on this issue? And say I did trip a "breaker", would it re trip itself back to the ON position? If not, how could I do that?Thank you,

There is a relay box for the rear window on the driver side behind the side panel, take the panel loose and you will see it, its a square gray box with wires plugged into it, it has four relays and other electronics inside of it, the relays can get weak or go bad over years of use. I ordered new relays and rebuilt the one for my truck because a new relay box is 300 - 400 dollars. The wire you shorted out is the main wire from the alt to the fuse box under the hood, so i doubt that did anything to cause the rear window not to work, but i guess anything is possible.

Sure the rear gate is fully closed and locked? Window won't roll up if the rear gate isn't locked.

And it's most likely that the "REALLY thick white 12v + wire" victim of drilling is the charge wire from the alternator- nothing particularly relavent to the rear window, as long as the battery is charging. It would affect the whole vehicle, not just the rear window.

Thanks boys. The top is off again today because i'm picking up an engine and trans for this muscle car I'm restoring, but I will definately check more into this when I get home. The tail gate is closed, so I will try to bypass the tailgate switch, and look into the "topper switch" (where is that?) and thge relay. Thanks again, I'm sure you'll hear from me in a bit,

Ps, what part number from toyota (or other places) were those relays?

And not trying to question you, but are you sure that the big white wire is a charge wire from the alt? And any word on a (preferrably downloadable and free) a service manual that's better than haynes? It's complete garbage

You can see where the switch is. Put the bolt in and your window will work, if everything is working that is.

The bolt was in and it didn't work, perhaps hard-wire the switch out? could the shortage have caused the relay to blow?
