i have just purchased a 1986 toyota pickup. it 2wd and has a 22r carb engine. truck currently has 76k original miles and bone stock! my plans right now are to solid axle swap. i have done some searching but also would just like info and opinions from you all. what i would like to accomplish is:
i would like to be able run 33" to 35" tires and dont mind trimming fenders and bed wheel openings. currently the truck is a automatic transmission and thought i may convert to 5 speed manual. im aware i will need a 6 lug toyota rear axle as well as solid front axle that i may have found from a 83 toyota pickup. also they have the rear that im unsure if its best i use that?
what else do i need and what do you all recommend?

i would like to build this to be a decent trail rig as well as get parts needed as cheap as possible. Also if you or if you know anyone selling parts that will help me with this project, please contact me and i would greatly appreciate it.

i do have cash now to start buying parts to begin this build!!!

Funny how the older one gets some ideas one had in their youth look quite labor extensive 40 years later.

If at all possible buy a complete donor vehicle just the time and money spent on numerous trips for little things we all tend to forget make it worth it.

i think that rear end is still the narrow width version?? what most people want is the wider rear end with the stronger turbo/v6 differential, so check what you have on the '86.

doing this right for 35" and bigger means relocating the steering box as far forward as you can, plating the frame under the box, tied in with reinforcement that attaches into the crossmember of the front frame area, etc.

if you build it right you can move the front axle forward enough to fit 37" tires without cutting into the cab of the truck.

i would not be making any assumptions about 2wd rear end configurations, for example:

"I have a 5 lug axle with an 8" 3rd from an 85 2wd turbo truck. They are out there."

all i can get are the axles. He doesnt have the vehicle. He wants 400 for the front and rear. They have surface rust only but not too bad. They are complete though. Is that a fair price for them?
then i thought about getting a sas kit from trail gear or all pro.

if the '83 rear end is factory original, the link info suggests that it is the narrow rear end, that some people don't want... i'd see what he'll take for just the front end, then when you get there stack front vs. rear beside each other, and confirm that the rear is the same width as the front(wms to wms)... the rear axle might already be the later wider version, because people swap 'em out regularly.

the reason for going with the wider rear end in the first place is because people usually cut off the spring mounts, and re-weld 'em back on with the nose of the third member rotated upwards... so you want to have a firm plan in place before you start.

the factory solid front axle housing is pretty weak, it will bend, and some people think that any kind of welding you do on it will warp it... one indicator that it could be bent is when the axle shafts won't pull out of the housing.

if you ever pull a solid front axle apart, keep track of how the shims on the top and bottom of the knuckles are stacked, because that's what centers the knuckle on the ball, and sets the drag when it's turned.

For what it is worth I sold a complete running 83 4x4 for $300.00

Granted it needed some Tender loving care but moved under it`s own power

Five lug rear with a six lug front and lose the ability to rotate tires???

If I was doing a sas i would get the axles before they are gone.
There is a forum for sas info, so you don't get led in circles about a fairly straightforward project.

that's not what the links said.

1)know what you are getting, 2)don't spend money building an early narrow rear end.

complete wide rear axles are plentiful and relatively cheap.
