1986 4runner problem
i just changed my oil and filter yesterday. i drained all of my oil and put in 5 quarts of royal purple synthetic oil and a k&N oil filter. i let it run for 15 minutes before i drove it and when i went to back up it had hardly any power and when i gave it gas it blew out alot of smoke. now its stuck in my friends parking lot because it won't move without blowing a massive cloud of smoke. it sounds like its running fine when i start it up, it just won't move. i let the oil drain for about 3 hours today before i put the screw back in my oil pan and put the new oil in, could that have hurt it.

Same here. I'm guessing that Wabbit is right in that there is something else that we're not seeing or being told. Of course if the OP would decide to come back and give us an update it'd help........

ok its a 22re and you put 5 quarts which is already too much oil and thats prolly some of the prob you need to drain about a quart out and see if that helps. Oh and um you didn't need to drain oil for 3 hours.... 20 mins tops is all you need..... is it auto? sounds like maybe a trans prob too um more info and what happen preivous to oil change?

dunno but i know 22r's don't like too much oil they will let you know quick they don't like it. still awaiting info from this guy if it did this anybefore or what... not enough info... might just have a pcv system prob if its buring oil or the girl my be a bit worn out in the rings and or is leaking past valve stems... ERG stuck open? take vac line of egr and see if it helps. mass air flow? too thick of oil? timing?

fixed it
sooooo.... i fixed it. the deal was that the transmission fluid pan was in the place where a oil pan normally would be on a vehicle. i drained all of the transmission fluid out thinking it was oil. but it wasnt as dumb as it sounds... the transmission fluid wasn't red like it should be, it was oil colored amber, like dirty oil. so draining all of the transmission fluid out was a good thing since i just put in 4 quarts of automatic transmission fluid today when i figured out the problem. the oil pan and plug are under the front axle close to the engine. so, i re-drained the new/old mix of bad oil and new royal purple that cost like 9-10 dollars a quart and put new royal purple 10w-30 in and it runs great now. it still blows some smoke, but i'm assuming that it's because i overfilled with oil. i added 5 quarts on top of an already "full" engine. i dont see any problems as of now from the situation other than the smoke coming out of my exhause. it was a good excuse to go to napa auto parts to do some parts shopping. i also got a license plate backing and clear plastic license plate cover for the front so that it won't rattle as much. cleaned the license plate and it looks nice now. i had a question about putting a pcv vent on my engine. here is a link of another guy, maybe one of you, who put one on his 4runner that is the same as mine. the picture is a little more than halfway down the page. it's a picture of the guys hood open and his red engine with a "pcv vent" on the engine.

sorry about that long url. also, i've had some "problems" starting my car for a while now. when i turn my key i have to have the key turned over for about 10 seconds until my 4runner starts. what could the problem be. thanks for all of the input guys! i didn't expect such fast responses that's why i didnt check this until now, also i was changing oil and transmission fluid today. i will be putting up pics of my 4runner soon.
