87 4-runner (22RE) was running fine Friday. Went out this morning to start it, and it cranks great (held for 10 seconds a few times), but doesn't start. I have read like 5 other posts on this site about similar stuff, but I need a starting point. What should I check first? Thanks in advance.

on the drivers side under the dash theres a kick panel that can be removed with 2 screws. under that is fuses and relays. on the fuse block lookin at it the bottom right i believe is the efi fuse. (red 7.5 amp fuse) that could be your problem. if anything if you have electric windows try to roll them down. if they dont then thats the problem. funny thing is is that the efi fuse controls the fuel system and a lot of other things including the window motors. if that dosent work lemme know!

Ok. Checked that. Thanks, it seemed fine. IN fact, I am now a little more confused b/c I went home, and it started first try, like nothing. Let it run a minute, and everything was fine. I went out again this morning before work, and same thing....no start! The only thing I can think of is that there is a problem with the cold??? It is like 43 here this morning (pretty chilly for San Diego), and it was like 65-70 yesterday when I got home. If the temperature was he issue, would that change anything? Thanks again in advance.

yep your cold start injector sensor could be the problem or the cold start injector itself or coolant temp sensor. how many miles are on the motor and have you ever replaced injectors?

I just experienced that. Sounds like your Cold Start Injector or your CSI Timing Switch. You can run some resistance test on the Cold Start Injector. I cant recall the resistance at this time, but mine tested good. It wound up being corrosion on connector to the CSI.

My finger is on the Timing Switch and is brown in color, and keys are on the CSI.

So normally I would never think this, except that I completely rebuilt my engine and when I was done I never hooked up the MAF sensor, and had the exact same problem.
Years later, I was running my truck and dropped the hood and the truck just stopped and wouldn't restart, a little while later it started and ran until i hit a bump, I opened the hood and whacked the MAF and it started up again. My point is that will cause similar symptoms, Just give it a few whacks while trying to start it and see if that helps.
I re-soldered mine and haven't had a chance to try it again, but i'm sure it will fix my problem because there were some loose contacts.
