mysterious crank shaft problem
Im rebuilding A 22re and have come upon a problem:
the timing gear, oil pump drive gear are new and fit fine,( the crank is new to this engine.) but the harmonic balancer goes on but stops a quarter inch from where it should be. so there is a 1/4 inch space between back of balancer and oil seal. and a gap in the front where the bolt goes on. I hope this makes sense to someone out there because ive never had this problem before. the machine shop said there are two different size drive gears and mine is the longer one. I cant find any other info on this anywhere even at Toyota dealer

Earlier 22Rs had a dual row timing chain, I believe 8/83 was the cutoff. I am not sure of the oil pump drivespline, but I would assume the early years had a shorter drive gear. '85 and later have a different block. If you have mixed parts, then I could easily see how the harmonic balancer would not fit correctly.
If you remove the oil pump and just place the oil pump drive gear on the drivespline, are there 1/4 inch of drivesplines exposed? If so, go search for the shorter version at your local junkyard.
Did you convert from single row to dual row timing chain by any chance?

the block is a correct one according to pics at 22re performance. the drive gear is correct for this engine, I guess, it is the longer one. timing gear on shaft does stick out quarter inch. I can not find a shorter gear around reno, I might have to go to sac or find on online.
I had a machine shop chop off a 1/4 inch off of gear. but they took a hair too much I think because I started her up and there is a rub noise. I knew it was off because timing notch on pulley was a just a little too far from what is normal. Oops again

You can try going to pick-n-pull, or somewhere like that, and see if you can find a shorter drive gear. That way you can find different trucks and compare them. Earlier trucks with dual row chains more than likely had shorter drive gears. I believe '84-'85 trucks have the old block with a single row chain, which I could also see having an effect on the drive gear.
You said it has a new drive gear? Maybe the place you bought it sent the wrong one. If so, you might be able to return it.
