Little bit of rod knock...
I have a little bit of rod knock after my ordeal a few days ago. Anyway it happens the first 5 to 10 seconds of cold startup. Along with the oil light being on. After light goes off, knock stops and visa versus. Only other time I can get it to knock a little is when the rpms are close to 4K. No oil light though. I've pulled the caps for crank rods and one is pretty worn, but the crank itself is smooth and ok. My question is I know its possible to put crank bearings in with the motor in, but is it possible to do the mains and thrust washers?

Yes it is possible to change the main shells and thrust washers with the engine in place.
I make a little tool from a cotter pin, sort of 'T' shaped and put that into the oil hole in the main journal so that when you turn the crank. it turns the old upper main shell out.
Only loosen and remove one main cap at a time so that the crank does'nt have any tendancy to drop and put a strain on the rear main seal.

I certainly can't lay claim to the idea, I have known the way to get it done for many years and i have used it with good results on many different type engines.
I either read about it in a 1940s' or 1950s' repair manual, or maybe one of the clever old men i was privileged to know in my youth put me on to it.
