AC Questions

I am installing a completely new AC system on an 85 Toyota 4x4 pickup, and have several questions that I have not been able to answer through searching the wealth of knowledge here:

Note this is an original R12 system and is converting to R134a, so ND-8 oil is being used.

I have a new (rebuilt compressor from Toyota) that is already filled with ND-8 oil. I can't get a straight answer on the quantity of oil, but the consensus from Toyota is the quantity filled is just for the compressor. So first question would be how much oil is in there, and knowing that how much more oil should be added to a system that has a new condenser, evaporator, and drier?

Per the FSM, when the condenser, evaporator, or drier is replaced oil should be added to the compressor. I have all three replaced. Is adding oil to the compressor as directed in the FSM the best way to add oil and should it be added to the high or low side, or does it matter?

There is a TSB from Toyota (found on this site - thanks) for converting the 86-94 trucks from R-12 to R134a, but it seems contradictory in oil and Freon installation.

86-88 All 10P13 N/A N/A N/A 16050 ND–Oil 8 100 700. The last two numbers, oil in cc's and refrigerant in grams. 100cc's for oil and 700 g for refrigerant.. The TSB directs half of the oil in the new drier, and half during the charge process. However, the TSB also notes this:

"Oil and refrigerant charge amounts are different after the R–12 system has been retrofitted to R134a. Refrigerant charge amounts are less, while oil charge amounts are greater, compared to R–12 system requirements.*"

Neither one of these statements is true.

Per the FSM the R12 refrigerant charge is 600 to 800 g with R12, so the R134a quantity suggested in the TSB (700 g) would be the same as R12 nominal +/- a percent.
Per the FSM, mineral oil quantity for R12 is 160 to 220 cc, depending on whether you use the high or low numbers given in the FSM. The low numbers total 160 cc and is clearly greater than the 100 cc total given in the TSB.

Or, maybe I am looking at this wrong. Per the FSM for R12 mineral oil:

Compressor 60-100cc
Condenser 40-50cc
Drier 20cc
Evaporator 40-50cc

Perhaps this is saying a full charge with all new components is 100 cc, and adding oil with the other component replacements is because of the residual oil in that component when it is replaced?

Thanks for any help clearing this up
