85 4runner EFI stock exaust manifold

85 4runner EFI 4x4
Ive been trying to do some research on my exaust manifold. My engine is getting ready to be rebuilt and the engine guy thought that maybe i have the wrong exaust manifold. It has block off plates for the 2 ports. im trying to see when stock, i needed those tubes hooked up, what they are called and where they go from the manifold.

Hello deserttoy, the exhaust manifold that you have is indeed stock. I also own an 85 runner and have the same manifold. The block off plates are for the air injection system that some of these trucks came with. Its meant to help with emissions.

My '87 Runner is stock, with the same blocked manifold.

My '88 Runner Does have the PAIR air injection system as stock.

Have a Toyota dealer run your serial number, if necessary, to prove whether your truck was ever equipped with the air injection, or not.

If the truck was not built with it, they can't make you retrofit it.

As long as the machine is equipped with whatever emissions devices it left the factory with, (working properly, of course); it is emissions compliant.

Get your facts straight, and don't let them jerk you around. Even in Kalifornia, the Love-Nazis are not omnipotent. (We have ways to make you recycle, heh, heh, heh...)

The system does not have a mechanical driven pump per se.

Maybe some earlier systems did use a belt driven pump, IDK. Several American made machines I owned had them.

The Toyota PAIR or pulsed air injection system, is a passive system that uses reed valves

and takes advantage of the changing pressures in the exhaust system to pull extra air into the exhaust stream.

The exhaust manifold you want is where the O2 sensor is mounted in the manifold. 88 and newer trucks, the manifold O2 sensor is formed with the O2 sensor blocked off and the O2 sensor was installed in the exhaust pipe near the transfer case.. I think the PAIR system was used on 88 and newer, but I could be wrong on that.

my '86 4runner passes california smog testing with those same block off plates... you do need the O2 sensor in the manifold, like terry says.
