84 22r crankshaft pulley problem
I am reassembling everything after doing a head gasket/timing chain job.
Head, chain, new timing cover, and new oil pump are all installled. I am pretty sure it's assembled properly: the oil pump drive spline was put on with the teeth toward the front of the truck, and the oil seal ring is fully seated in the oil pump. The crank turns easily (using the crank bolt), but only if the crank pulley is not on.
I did a preliminary valve gap clearance, spun the crankshaft by hand and also using the starter. The timing chain installation seems okay.
Here is the problem:
If the crank pulley is then put on the crankshaft, and after tightening the crank bolt, the crank is impossible to turn (clutch in neutral, of course). It seems like the inside "dust lip" of the crank pulley is mashing against the protruding part of the oil pump, so that they're in complete contact once the crank bolt is tight. Shouldn't there be a little space there, so the crank pulley doesn't scrape against the oil pump? What am i doing wrong?
I'm scared to do anything right now without some advice.

Addendum:
not sure if this is a problem: the new oil pump I installed is an Aisin OTC-054. It seems to fit perfectly on the timing cover. I bought it from Rockauto, but searching other suppliers showed a bit of conflict over whether it is the right fit for the vehicle. Mine is an early 1984 22r in 4wd carb pickup.
Maybe this part is not 100% compatible?

Been frustrated with this most of the afternoon.
Here is a photo of the crank pulley. Is it normal for the interior ridge to be flat on one side? Or is this due to wear? (hope you see what I mean in the photo). You can also see a groove in the shaft---is that normal, or due to wear?
also: i made a mistake in the previous post--the oil pump is an Aisin OPT-054 (not OTC-054), and the tech helper at RockAuto told me over the phone that other customers with Toyota '84s had purchased that part in the past with no issues. So maybe it's not the pump's fault.
Hmm.

I went ahead and ordered a new crank pulley last night, thinking the wear on the old one was causing it to be pushed in too far. But then I got to wondering how, if the pulley was so bad, did it perform as well as it did? There were no issues with wobbly belts/pulleys or oil leaks (at least that I was aware of) before I took the thing apart.

Well, it was a problem with the oil pump. The Aisin OPT-054 (left in photo) is not appropriate for the 1984...it is nearly 1 cm deeper than another aftermarket pump i bought (right).
Beware...RockAuto was not the only place I saw the Aisin OPT-054 listed as fitting the 1984.

there are a lot of 85 parts that fit with the 84. however I have an early build 84 22r the head is different, I have dual timing chains, etc... it's been a headache getting some parts like you mentioned for the early 84 model 22rs.
