Thanks, it went great! No leaking fluids, no unusual sounds and the oil level only moved down a hair on the dipstick. I'm starting to feel real glad I didn't give up on this thing

Nothing new. It's at a friends as I was moving. It's a 101 miles away from me at the moment.

Driving the truck and trailer up there next week to go get her.

rescue mission.

I figured if the army and marine corps couldn't get it done the Air Force wasn't going to help much. But thanks for the correction.

Great thread, great work! It's a shame that clean engine has to get covered up by shrouds and hoses.

I'm working on a surface level overhaul on mine right now... just exterior seals and gaskets, crank seals, and cleaning all the mud/oil off. Your clean engine bay pic is solid inspiration for me to not give up and cut corners!

Thanks Ocell and 1985 4Runner. Glad my stumbling through this rebuild project helped some people out!

I was in such a hurry to get the engine back in the truck that I never posted photos of the final build and engine install. We've all seen it before, but here's mine anyway:
I pulled the bellhousing which made cleanup a breeze and used a dry paper gasket to seal up the input seal cover. Permatex #2 on the bolts. No leaks!

The original paint cleaned up pretty well with simple green and the occasional shot of goof off. Waxed it to keep it looking good.

Engnbldr stock head and cam, osk timing kit w/ plastic guides, original bolts all cleaned by hand, which really su*ked.

NPW water pump, supposedly better quality than U.S.-made aisin pumps.

Took hours to get them to mate together! Had to remove the lower half of the engine mounts to make it happen, so maybe try that first and save yourself a big headache.
