Ugh HELP. No headlights/brakelights 1979 4x4 pickup.

When I bought the truck it was running almost 19volts coming off altentor. Keep that in mind. I replaced the voltage regulator and that fixed that problem. Now I cant figure out why the headlights/breaklights arnt working, the didn't work before I put the new regulator on. But I'm deffintly a newb when it comes to wiring diagrams and using a multimeter. I need help I want to get these darn lights working so I can start daily/wheelin it. I did notice brakelights bulbs are blown could they have been blown due to the high amount of voltage it was running before regulator was replaced? Need help!! BTW the turn signals work front and back with no problems and also the lever on the column to turn the wipers on does nothing and headlights don't either. Don't know if that means anything just trying to throw it all out there. Any help would be do greatly appreciated.

Checking conditions of bulbs/connections is a good start.

Visual condition of connectors/wiring..?

That charging system malfunction may have very well damaged/disturbed multiple vehicle electronics.

Condition of fuses..?

Poor battery terminal(s) condition..?

Corrosion..?

Keep it simple take your time. Eliminate the obvious.

Obviously I would check all your bulbs if you were putting out 19V. Replace any that are broke. Also check all your fuses under the dash. I believe the wiper motor is on a fuse. Report back after that.

How old is the alternator? Also the battery? Those the only things should mess with the voltage regulator.

You need to edit the grammer in your previous post so I can understand it better.

I'm so glad the the previous owner of my truck did not smoke and leak while eating old fries - that would be a hell of a mess to inherit...

these forums really are useless arnt they.

for more input from members, change the title to "Ugh HELP. No Headlights or brake lights". With that slash in there all we see on the main page is "ugh HELP. No"

fix the obvious, change your battery if you know its bad.

Sorry my iPhone has stupid autocorrect. I ment the battery smokes and leaks from previous owner never changing regulator. I'm replacing the altenator today and using a battery I know is good and seeing what happens.

Changed alternator and the truck is putting out 14.8 volts or so. Now to fixing the headlights/brakelights. Where should I start?

Check all the bulbs in your tail lights and make sure they are right bulb number, don't just check to see if they are blown. As for the headlights see if you have voltage at the headlight connector when you turn the headlight switch on. If you do and no lights come on, then buy new headlights.

So I just put new tail lights on my 85 pickup after also putting new bulbs in and no break lights are working but when I push the breaks my headlights come on, do y'all think it's a blown fuse or what?
