Starter for 76 Hilux, 20r

Bare with me as I'm still learning. I've got a 76 Toyota Hilux (Chinook camper if you want to know) that needs a new starter. I bought one from auto zone after they looked it up for me but when I went to install it, it turned out to be too long to fit in it's place. I thought maybe I was doing something stupid, but I had a more auto savvy buddy look at it and he couldn't make it fit either. Unfortunately I didn't write down the model before returning it, but if anyone has had the same problem and knows exactly which starter I need I would appreciate it. I don't want to go through the process of trial and error with a bunch of different ones if I don't have to. Thanks.

Try looking at them on Rock Auto. They're pretty good. You can also try the dealership. You don't have to buy one from them, but they can give you more info on where Autozone went wrong (other than their very existence). Autozone should be only used ever as a last resort.

I had a 78 Chinook up until just over a year ago. Great little camper.

Well...looks like that part has been long discontinued. They toyota dealer told me they can only get parts as far back as 85. Since I have no way of telling which aftermarket version of the starter will actually fit, I think i'm going to buy a rebuild kit and try to repair it. I just talked to an auto electrician and he said since it still clicks every time and starts after enough tries, I probably just need a new set of contacts and plunger. Now to find the correct rebuild kit!

That's crazy. I was still getting quite a few parts for my 78 through the dealership just a couple years ago, but oh well. I'll bet places have them aftermarket, but yeah if you can get your old one back, a rebuild kit is always better with the OEM starters anyway. I'll bet Rock Auto or someone else still sells a starter for your truck, but yeah. Rebuilding is better.
