83 22R Bucking Like a Bull need help..

Hey guys, I have yet another problem. First off I was trying to fix an issue with it backfiring when shifted. The float level was set to high in my carburetor. I tried adjusting it(never could get it down to the right level still too high). I ended up finding out the back firing problem was caused from a valve next to the fuel pump and a hair below it.. That valve is connected to a black cannister that is then connected to the air cleaner. I tried plugging that and bingo.. back firing gone! I just plugged the big hose going to the air cleaner at first... well that night I was headed home after it was warmed up and I started pickup speed and getting into the higher RPM's it all of sudden started bucking like a mule.. like its starving for fuel. I automatically assumed it was the Fuel filter as I had meant to check it that day and just forgot. Luckily I was close to an Autozone, I pulled the filter off and sure enough it sounded like a baby rattle with all the crud in it. I bought a filter replaced and continued on my way home. And same story.. started getting into the higher RPM's pickup speed and it started bucking again. I tried taking the plugs off of that valve and hooking it back up and still no luck. I am no fixing to try to readjust the float but I fail to see how that would be the problem as it has too much fuel in the bowl and it acts like its sucking the bowl dry.

I should also add that when it starts bucking if I let off the gas pedal for a few seconds (maybe 5-10) It will be good to go again for a little bit before it starts trying to buck again.

By bucking I mean POWER! NO POWER! POWER! NO POWER! etc.. lol It really acts like its starving for fuel but how can that be if the bowl is already running with too much fuel in it... the fuel level running and turned off and while giving it gas stays consistantly at exactly the very top of the site glass. It has new plugs. The wires look to be fine as well as cap and bug. It has a fresh rebuild kit in the carb (not more than 100 miles ago). Motor was rebuilt 12000 miles ago.

Is there more than one fuel filter on the truck? If there is where is the other one.. I just replaced the one on the passenger inner fender in the little bracket.

Need to get it fixed today as I dont have a ride to work

Well I spoke too soon. Its not fixed yet. It is still bucking... although I have found that it only does it when I hold it above a certain RPM for a short period it will start bucking... My best guess now is that the mechanical fuel pump isnt enough to keep up with the engine...

The float is now set correctly. I have readjusted the carburetor and the timing. I'm also having an issue with it trying to bog down when trying to push the accelerator more than half way down (not sure if the two issues are related).

Think I'm going to throw an electric fuel pump on it tomorrow and see if that helps me out..

Could someone tell me what PSI to set the regulator to plz?

Also any suggestions with this would really be appreciated.

I believe the stock fuel pump is around 7 psi for the stock carb.

Tell me what you did to readjust the carb. Will the truck idle properly?

My 83 pickup is doing the exact same thing, fuel filter is new, fuel pump was replaced not too long ago. What did you do to fix yours? Thanks
