[edit] 21R
The 2-valve SOHC 2.0 L (1972 cc) 21R was produced from 1978 through 1987.
Cylinder bore was 84 mm (3.31 in) and stroke was 89 mm (3.5 in).
Output in 1978, constrained by emissions, was 105 hp (78 kW) at 5200 rpm and 116 ft·lbf (157 N·m) at 3600 rpm. Air injection and California emissions equipment for the 21R-C (1982-1985) dropped power down to 90 hp (67 kW) at 5000 rpm. The air-injected Japanese version, the 21R-U, produced 105 hp (78 kW) at 5200 rpm and 120 ft·lbf (162 N·m) at 3600 rpm but dropped to 101 hp (75 kW) at 5400 rpm and 114 ft·lbf (154 N·m) at 4000 rpm in 1986.

What is the difference between a 21r-c and a 21r-u, i was told they had a dual carb setup in japan but mine has a single carb, and i was wondering if any of they parts off of it will fit on a 22r? thanks

What, exactly, was incorrect about my statement? It is a 1.9 (argued to be 2.0, ok ill give you that)
You CANNOT find parts for those engines here in America.
Those engines are low-output japanese crate engines that are not emissions legal for the USA. They are NOT good engines. And they are indeed underpowered. 105hp (assuming that Wikipedia, the worlds most reliable source is correct) is not exactly "high output", and you completly skipped over Torque ratings. All the horsepower in the world won't do you any good if you don't have torque.
Assuming wikipedia is correct:
21R-U 105hp@5200rpm 116lbs@3600
22R 108hp@5000rpm 138lb@3400
You also need to compare usable RPM ranges. 5200rpm is not a realistic HP range for the 21R to be using. Most people take it up to 4k or so. So again the HP rating numbers are not relevant.
Add on to that, if you got a Air-injected model HP was only 90!
Pirate confirms it http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45205
So, it would seem, we also have some "smart" members on here. "Dont listen to 85excab" That back and forth could go on all day, but the numbers prove it.

Difference between the two is emissions, which affects output. You can check this info, since its what 85excab chose to reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_R_engine

96 is indeed underpowered, but again the torque levels are still higher than the 21R. And matching year for year, the 22R has 108hp to the 21R's 105, and 20+ MORE torque.
Add on that you can't find parts for it in America, and yea, I would call that a garbage engine. Don't believe me? Search most any forum on the net. Heck, go ask over on Pirate and see what they say over there.
