@highonpottery

is that eBay kit for the Toyota pickup 78? I've searched on there and have not found that listing.

Most underdash units are not model specific. My dad bought a new 73 hilux with the 18rc and installed an underdash a/c from a 1960s ford. I don't remember how he mounted the compressor. I've had 2 1977 pickups with a/c and neither has had the same underdash unit and neither matched up to what the owners manual shows. Both of my trucks have used the same belt for the smog pump and compressor.

They're universal kits. If anything's model-specific it's likely a bracket for mounting the AC compressor so everything lines up on your pulleys. The rest I'm assuming is sized according to the size of vehicle space available and requirements (like single cab truck vs 4dr sedan, but likely they're still the same)

My dad bought a brand new 1973 Corolla and had the dealer install A/C. It was identical to the one in post 18 and it said "Nippondenso" in chrome letters. It worked well for the nine years we had that car.

1978 a/c

Some if not all 1978 a/c systems are aftermarket and add ons only a few came from factory and mostly in rvs
go to vintage aire they have all the components you need to do it. My 78 has a 1985 setup in it it which is much easier to find/fix
however I’m taking it out and doing vintage aire setup like in what I’m doing to a 1974 ford econoline also.
best parts best tech help etc etc they dont mess around with guessing at vintage aire.although it will be a combination of universal systems with vent choices etc they look pretty slick when done.go check out their site you will see what I mean.
ypu will want an upgraded radiator for an original non a/c truck for sure though.outside of that you can pick and chose what you want. Heat/a/c heat alone a/c alone etc
good luck 🤙🏻
