Code Reader Recommendation? (1987)

I have an '87 4 Runner, 22RE.
Any suggestions for a decent code reader?

Time for me to grow up diagnostically.

Thanks!

OBD 1 vehicle codes can be read with a paperclip or a piece of wire
No need for a scanner
plug in the wire turn the key
count the light flashes

I have got a vintage high end Snap-On Mt-2500 scanner and software cartridges for early Aisian imports that is able to read real time sensor output values and run several different diagnostic routines on my late model ('95) OBD=1 Runner. This scanner was very helpful to me when my '95 was giving me problems.
Although my '87 Runner has the same format diagnostic plug as the '95 does, it does'nt appear that the simpler ECM computer on the '87 supports the same level of data stream output as the '95 computer does. All I could get out of the scanner when I had it hooked up to the '87 was the stored trouble codes. I could'nt find any real time data streaming; although I have to say that I am not completely familiar with the early Toyota OBD-1 systems yet and how the scanner looks at them. There may be a way to get more data out than I know at this point. I need to fool with the scanner some more on the '87 truck.
At this point though, the paper clip method will tell you everything my scanner has told me.
On later OBD-1 models though, it acts as much more than a mere code reader.
These old MT-2500 scanners can be picked up for a couple hundred $$, and with the correct adapters and software cartriges they are a wonderful tool on most makes and models of older cars.
New price, back in the day, was in the thousands of $$.
Software can be got for them covering all makes and models including make and model specific OBD-2 up to at least 2004. Heck, mine even came with software for jeeps.

I can't believe I missed the paper clip lesson before this.
Just thought I had to have the computer.
Too cool!

It's like someone pointed out the elephant that has been standing right in front of me for a very long time.

As far as the vintage scanner goes, that could be fun to mess with some day. Vintage electronics still don't feel vintage to me.
