22re Performance Engine

I recently acquired a 1990 single cab 4x4 pickup with a blown motor. Everything else was in pretty good condition. My wife and I decided that we would turn it into a mud/rock toy. Played with many ideas of upgrading to bigger motor but decided that we would just put the extra money toward transfer cases.

My quest for a as close to turn key as possible engine replacement was actually pretty hard. Most everyone just wants to ship you a long block. I stumbled across 22re Performance and gave them a call. Jim (the owner) was by far the nicest of all places I had call (about 8). He answered all of my qustions very politly and went into details about his answers. Anything and everything I asked if Jim could do he said no problem, or i wouldnt do that if i were you because.... He even asked what the use of the motor would be and talked me out of his stage II so i could but the money toward the transfer cases.

They are currently cleaning up my intakes (upper and lower) rebuilding my fuel injectors, cleaning fuel rail, installing water pump, all senders, new thermostat, checking harmonic balancer, basically anything that’s on the main part of the engine they are cleaning up, inspecting and or replacing. It was so nice not to get the, "we don’t do that, no not that either, all we sell are long blocks." So far Jim has been awesome and really given his all with customer service on a personal level. He even set up shipping for me to ship my motor since I didn’t have time to research shipping companies.

I have not received my motor back yet but I have no doubt it will be as good as their customer service has been.

One word of warning... They seem to be a very very busy shop and there for hard to get a hold of. Don’t be discouraged just leave a message and keep calling. The level of service is worth the wait.

I will update when I get my motor back.

Their website is 22reperformance.com

I've bought several parts from them, they were paramount in doing my first head gasket. They went above and beyond, answering questions that didn't even have anything to do with the parts I bought from them.
A+ for 22re performance, by far the best vendor I've dealt with.

Amen. I agree 100 percent. I dont have a ton of time right now to go into detail but Jim is absolutely the best person i have ever dealt with in this industry. He practically held my hand over the phone while i installed this motor (my first JAP motor). This motor is bad ass and has tons of power. This motor blows my buddies V6 out of the water. It took alot for me to come off the extra money needed to go with 22re performance (i did the stage II) vs other builders but i can honestly say that i dont think you could find a better motor or better customer service anywhere in the world. You get what you pay for.

I will give a more detailed review after i get my exhaust next week (have a horrible exhaust leak right now)

Im thinking of ordering a thorley tri y with a flowmaster 50.

Like the idea of the Tri-y... Have you thought about the Borla at the other end? LOVE mine.

I, too, spoke many times with Jim and he walked me through the terrible nightmare I had been in with my first machinist... helped me, along with engnbldr(whom he never dogged) and got me going in the right direction, where I finally ended up fully rebuilding my own 22RE/Mild-Moderate performance motor w/cam, etc., etc. He knew I was strapped at the time and helped me figure out OTHER companies to use to just fix the parts that the guy had broken/helped me decide to just start fresh with a new/used short block.... Spent PLENTY of time on me, KNOWING he wasn't likely going to sell me anything! Had to do my own build, but I would GLADLY use them... Heard nothing but good things/HAD nothing but great service, even though I wasn't buying anything!

Jim did tell me his favorite header for his motors was the LCE... Which is what I have. BUT, he didn't dislike the Tri-y at all. Not sure if he is partial to the LCE or not/and maybe he's changed his thoughts on that. One thing I told me, clearly... "NO CAI!" hahaha...

Have fun with it and maybe post up some pics/video, EHHHHHH? haha. You know we love our Yotaporn around here! hehe.

Any pictures of the engine?

I just recently bought a 3rd gen 4cylinder truck with a blown HG. The chassis and engine has close to 600,000 miles! I'm back and forth on going with 22re performance or an Attarco engine.
I've had a couple friends that ran Attarco engines that had major mechanical issues.... but at $900 for a long block I guess you get what you pay for hahaa.

Any feedback on how the engine looks/performs would be appreciated.

Sub'd!

No personal experience and this doesn't mean much, but just thought that I'd mention that 80% of the 22REs rolling around in Chico are easily from Jim Putney aka 22REPerformance so that must mean something right?

The only thing that I have against them is that it can be a bit hard some times to reach them on the phone since they are so busy...so just keep trying lol.

Sorry I don't have any pictures of the pretty engine that Jim sent me. It went straight in and then straight to the trails. Now I looks like its got 10 years of trail dirt on it . The engine was gorgeous when I first got it. Everything looked brand new. Block was painted black, head was bare, valve cover was painted in some really cool black and silver crackle paint.

As for performance, I did the stage II and have not had a chance to put on my new LC header (took jim's advice and did the LC) but it still runs like a bat out of hell. It will easily out run my buddies v6 yota. I could not be more happy. My next Yota will have its heart sent to Jim I can guarantee you that.

I have had very good service and parts from LC Engineering.I have a 78 22re their long block big bore kit (40 over). I run sand dunes at 6k rpm for long periods and just watch temp and oil pressure it also has plenty of low end for rocks and 40 inch tires.

I bought mine two years ago and has about 30k on it so far. Runs way better than the one that seized shortly after I bought the truck since the PO shaved the head too much. The shop that helped me install it was VERY impressed, as well as me. He was very easy to deal with and nice and very trustworthy about everything. I highly recommend this shop. You can even watch everything they do on youtube.

I bought a performance 22RE from a shop in Tacoma about 3 years ago, and LOVE it!!!
I don't know what "stage" it was, it's bored 30 over, with high compression pistons and rods, with stiffer springs and valves.
I've only put about 13K miles on it, but it makes it so much fun to drive! With stock gears & 31" tires I can still hold 4th and usually stay in 5th when pulling hills that used to knock me down to 3rd or even 2nd if the flow of traffic was to slow.
I didn't install it as the shop I bought it from offered a lifetime warrantee if they installed if.
After I took it in for the 2K mile check up & adjustment it's been problem free & running like a champ.
I'd recommend upgrading your 22RE to anyone, it's an amazing life changing event

22REPerformance.com vs United Engines

Guys,
Thanks for the feedback on 22reperformance.com!
22reperformance Stage 1 ($2195 + &400core) is more expensive than that of United Engine's ($1095) long block

I've seen one poor feedback on United. So do you think it's worth paying extra $1000 for the 22reperformance?

TIA
