Outer Banks 2012 Trip Report

Just got back from there. Just as an FYI for those who dont know, the OBX does not offer anything that is any challenge. There are some small islands on the intercoastal that can be a bit tricky getting out to when the tide goes out, but that is about it. (I got stuck once when the tide was coming back in, no bueno). Its not bad if you just want to drive on the beach, but if you want a challenge this is not for you. If you want a bit more of a challenge and still want the beach I highly recommend Cape Lookout. Just a word to the wise I wouldnt stay on the island without a firearm. Its not dangerous, but sometimes there are some crazy people on the island and there is no help of anykind out there. I have seen some crazy things out there.

Cape Look out...hmmm...must look into this.
You are right, no real challenge on the beach, however, driving in the fluffy sand can be a bit of a learning curve, but it certainly is no 'trail'.
I was suppose to be down there in the first week of July, also, but had to rearrange due to some business i need to take care of.

I've looked into Cape lookout, seems ideal for what we're looking for.. camping/kayaking & whatnot, easier to 4wd gear out then hire a shuttle to drop gear off after paddeling out from Harkers Island.
Thanks for the tip Hilux4life
