560 mile round trip to see the absolute most beautiful scenery in my life with my best friend. We originally wanted to do the whole thing, but apparently, everything was locked up which prevented us from further exploration. What sucks is if you google Usal Road, you get very little information about it from the people that wheel there. I'll fill you guys in later about it and give the details of what to look forward to if you do go there.

That is the road that got me into Toyotas in the first place.
What kind of preparation did you do for this trip?
Do you have any suggestions for planning a trip up there? What additional things would you add to your rig that would've helped your trip up?

I suggest you don't travel alone as this is a very remote area. And when I say alone, I don't mean passengers, I mean another truck. The road is doable in a Subaru but there is technical parts that require part time 4wd and a locker or some other traction aiding device. A winch can come in handy, but never leave home without a strap. 20 ton straps are as cheap as 20 bucks; buy one or two or three. Don't be an idiot and do what I did by going over the burm at the beach. It's an easy 30 degrees and the sand is really deep. I did it with 40psi in my tires, so it would've helped to airdown to about 10.

Pack food and beverages because the nearest town from the southern entrance is a good hour drive. The road stretches 30 something miles and takes a while to complete. I've read some people averaging 3 hours to cross it. We'll be going again in April when the roads open again, but right now, it's just not worth going there if you can't experience the whole adventure. You're free to join us if you want. I'd like to note that fuel consumption costed me at about $150. Of course my truck is riding on 32x12s with a spare on the roof and see you're from the North Bay area, you live ~80 miles closer to it.

Summer time its all dry and you can do it alone confidently, but thats no fun if there's no challenges.

I'm hoping to get my rig back together soon enough and head out there, I'd like to see if I can find some of the old logging towns that are hidden up around the Lost Coast. Plus I owe that place a backpacking trip, it's been on my to-do list for ten years now.

Absolutely beautiful scenery. I'd love to take a drive like that, even if the wheeling wasn't challenging. I'm a big fan of backpacking too. The remoteness would just be wonderful!
