Before you entrust some stranger to do your next bit of maintenance, you might want to check out this harrowing tale!

While most of us here at Yota Tech perform our own maintenance, chances are, you’ve probably used one of those cheap chain joints at least once in your life. After all, sometimes you just don’t have time. Or maybe you don’t want to mess with something like a simple brake job. And since these places make a living performing such services, they surely know what they’re doing, right? Well, as one poor Toyota 4Runner owner found out recently, that isn’t always the case.

According to California news source Bakersfield Now, Carl Brewer recently took his beloved Toyota 4Runner to a local Jiffy Lube for a brake job right after dropping off his daughter at daycare. He decided to hang in the waiting room while the work was being performed. But his routine service reportedly quickly turned into a total nightmare. Brewer says he overheard a technician tell the manager, “everything fell off.” The manager asked in disbelief, “What do you mean everything fell off?” Then he clarified: “All the wheels fell off!”

As alarming as this sounds, Brewer initially brushed it off, not even knowing they were talking about his Toyota 4Runner. But soon afterward, a technician gave him the horrific news. He also informed the shocked Brewer that the windshield was busted and that the service technician actually crashed through two signs during the test drive. When Brewer walked down to the site of the incident, a technician was already reinstalling the wheels. But the extensive damage effectively totaled the SUV.

“We certainly understand the seriousness of this recent event and are working diligently and directly with the guest to resolve the matter,” Jiffy Lube’s reps said in a press statement once the incident hit the local news. “We committed to ensuring that our processes and procedures regarding quality and training are reinforced so that such an incident does not happen again.”

Jiffy Lube eventually paid for a rental car and reimbursed Brewer for his damaged car seat. But his insurance company will only cover the current Kelly Blue Book value of the 4Runner.

The specific cause of the crash is still unknown, but Jiffy Lube is currently working to determine the cause of the accident.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, so we can use this bizarre story to as a cautionary tale.
