How-to: Shave your arse/Remove Decals *pics*

To followup on my Pinstripe Removal How-to...

What: Remove your emblems AND the tape/residue left over...
Why: Gold emblems haha... painting/swapping your emblems... removing your emblems (me)
Cost: $28, assuming you follow this method... which i highly recommend.
Time: 10min-30min
Effect: Perfectly removed Toyota/Dealer emblems AND adhesive with NO paint damage
Note: This process requires absolutely no chemical rubber removing compounds. Depending on paint fade, effects may vary. 97+ paint should be perfectly fine, this is not guaranteed.

Tools/items needed:
- 500rpm+ corded drill, something that wont burn up on you either...
- waxed dental floss, i used 10 meters for all of mine... so 1 container should be fine =)
- your brand polish
- your brand wax
- microfiber towels... it's all i use =)
- polish/wax applicators, you don't need a buffer today...
You should have all of the above anyways... so they're not included in what you need to buy =)
- Optional: Heatgun/hairdryer... this really isn't necessary *shrug*

What you need to buy:
- 3M Stripe Off Wheel PN: 051131-07498 (those last digits are the only ones you'll need)
Available at ANY NAPA Parts store. You should be able to haggle them down to $26+tax. There usual price is $36 I believe.


What I started with...


Step 1: holding the floss...
Just like you're flossing your teeth, wrap floss around a couple of fingers on each hand... the reason i say a couple is... i don't want anyone having the floss cut there hands. if your skin/hands are delicate, i recommend gloves =)


Step 2: learning to floss...
You will want to have a stance that is comfortable for you... this mainly depends on if you are left or right handed. I'm right, so i started from the right side of the emblem and moved backwards...
You will want to be in a position that allows you the most 'pull' and movement with your arms. for me this was an awkward, but effective, hunched stance.

Step 3: flossing...
Be gentle yet firm *shrug*
Depending on the temperature, it may be hard to get the floss through the glue/tape...
using an up/down movement, pull the floss towards you... kind of like a saw.
you will be breaking/wearing down the floss, so expect a couple of %@@*%'s as it breaks...


When you get most of the way through the tape, you might risk pulling on the emblem and getting it the rest of the way off BUT you also risk breaking the emblem *shrug*

Step 3b: ...but it's not working
If the floss alone isn't working...
a) your floss isn't strong enough (no more dollar store stuff =p)
b) your tape is too hard...
In this case, it will make your job easier by using a heat gun/hairdryer...
All you want to do is heat up the emblem, thus heating the tape/paint below the emblem.
Then use the floss...
SIMPLE!



Step 4: cleaning up the emblem goo/adhesive/tape
NOTE!!!!: This will shoot melted tape towards your arm... use long sleeves, unless you're a big boy and can handle a little melted plastic haha

You deff don't want to do this with a cordless one, as you'll be using it at 500rpm+ for 30 min.

It's very easy to attach, just screw it on and tighten it onto your drill...

Step 2: Removing the emblem crap...
NOTE: The destripper should always be used in the 'fwd' direction of the drill, or it may unscrew...
so... move from the right side of the emblem to the left...

Now, to get to step 2...
Unlike buffing, always have the drill moving when you start/remove the attachment from the paint... this is to keep the melted emblem/tape from cooling to the paint.
so, with the drill started, touch the end of the destriper to the emblem/tape... moving left/down the car, at the same time, moving up and down... to better explain it...
<v^v<v^<

Just ensure you keep a decent speed on the drill...
AND you keep with the same direction...
AND you touch the attachment to all of the tape.


Step 3: Remove the Emblem/Destriper Dust

Wipe that area off with 1 of your microfibers... don't use this cloth for anything else but to remove the eraser dust.
(at this point, you've probably realized, all the destripper is, is just a big giant eraser haha)

Step 4: Remove the destriper residue
Using one of your polish/wax applicators, gently rub your polish into the de-pinstripped area. wipe clean with ANOTHER one of your microfibers...
See the above pic, you'll see the residue where i've already cleared the dust.

Step 5: Removing the adhesive you missed
Follow Step 2 again, this time touch those areas you missed... there will always be some :o

Step 6: Finishing up
Re-wipe/polish the areas you re-did. Then wax and voila... all done.

You may want to rewash the entire car, as all of the surfaces will have dust.
Here's what you get...





NOTE!!!: For my 4runner, i'd imagine all 2nd and most 3rd gens, the circle T emblem was studded... meaning it used studs to further secure it. in this case, work from both directions with the floss. damn toyota for having this holes... i think it was to ensure advertising ahha. otherwise, my arse would be nice and clean =)

hahah

i didnt have that residue when i removed a badge on my rear hatch (dealer badge).

i used a hairdryer and heated it up a bunch. then did the dental floss bit and it came right off, leaving a slight film behind which came off in the next 2 wash and waxes.

nice! looks much cleaner w/o emblems. i think im going to do that on school break. i hope i have some eraser left.

short of the big ars erasor on a sick method. i pulled like 5 stickers off the back of mine. Hair dryer, and goo gone worked killer.

Finished it up with a clay bar, and some wax.

Those eraser wheels work great. i used one to take entire stripe off the sides of my 4Runner. Looks so much cleaner now. Took me about 2.5 hours with a cordless drill. I stopped a lot to let it cool down, but otherwise no problems. Would have prefered a wired one, but mine didn't work.

I may tackle those emblems next Looks good!

There is a product called Desolve-it sold at Wal-mart that will take the emblem and glue off without hurting the paint, works GREAT! It is sold in the house cleaning products section. It also has MANY other uses and is safe to the touch. A must have product!

Nice work! Gold is definitely not my thing. Then again, either is chrome. I shaved my emblems too.

I bet those gold ones would be worth something on ebay. Give it a shot.

I'm using the same thing by Wurth http://www.wurth.com/. Seems to work pretty good. Sure looks a whole lot better than those old ripped up stripes!
