Sound deading project 1/2 way done- pics and impressions
Guys,
See http://www.4runners.org/articles/sound
Whoa boy, talk about a project that takes the WHOLE weekend (not kidding here!). After a ton of reading and good advice from Bumpin Yota and others, I stripped my 4runner on the inside and applied McMaster's hi-temp mastic and carpet padding on the roof and the floorboard. I decided to skip the side panels but I may do it later. Also, while I wanted to do the door, I didn't do the doors b/c I ran out of time.
Although the McMasters stuff is cheap, there are some drawbacks: namely its not very pliable. Not to say its rock hard or anything like that, but compared to other products like Dynamat, there's no comparison. However, it is very easy to cut and is fairly easy to work with. So my advice is that if you prefer a totally seamless and "professional" looking application, you're better off spending the bucks and getting the other stuff. However, my goal was to deaden the road noise so a professional looking installation was not one of my main priorities.
Putting carpet padding was much easier. Defintely use the 3M 90 Spray Adhesive. Great stuff. I'd like to use it on Gray Davis if he comes into town.
The hardest part is taking the whole vehicle apart. You need a lot of space to put the stuff away. Also, there are snap fasteners everywhere and as you all know, those things break.
Toyota doesn't do a great job of deadening. There are only few places where they use rubber deadener and/or carpet padding:
Here is my 4runner w/ the HTM and carpet padding applied:
The roof had the LEAST amount of padding. There were 3 sections that needed deadening. I put 1 layer of HTM in all 3 sections, carpet padding in 3 of them (1/2 of 3rd section) and another layer of HTM in the 1/2 of the largest section due to space/height issues:
The rear cargo area had some padding and a rubber mat, but not enough. I put more as you can see:
My initial impression: VERY HAPPY. Even my wife noticed which says alot since her Camry is so much quieter. I beleive once I do the doors, it'll be a major improvement over stock.
Of course, a thorough write up will be done as soon as I finish the doors.

Guys,
For the life of me, I couldnt find Peel & Seal in my neighborhood Lowes or Home Depot. I ordered the HTM from mcmasters.com and picked it up at their LA facility. Those guys got their stuff together!
Yeah I hear Brown Bread is great stuff. If you intend to do the whole vehicle, I've already gone through about 60 sq ft of HTM (i think---guess right now). That covers 90% of the floor and 3/4ths of the roof (the areas where you can apply the stuff).
I estimated that the whole vehicle takes about 120 - 140 sq ft. Alot of material!

Good work Bob, That is a painstaking process. I recently did the same thing in my 3rd Gen, except I used Brownbread and Dynamat combo! You are going to be extremely pleased with the end result. My Runner was as quieter on the inside than my 740
Again, nice work

Guys,
I drove the freeways last night and whoa, so much quieter. Its so much quieter now that I actually hear the wind hitting the large mirrors. I'm convinced that it'll make more of a difference once I finish the doors.
The engine noise is what I hear most now. As much as I'd like to deaden the firewall, its alot of work that I can't even imagine doing, given this past weekend.
Also if I were to do it over again, I'd probably suck it up and buy something more pliable like the Brown Bread stuff.

I've noticed that my 94 is much quieter than my wifes 98. recently my daughted spilled an entire Coke on the floor of the 94. I took all seats/carpet out to clean. 95% of the floor was covered with a Dynomat like material and felt. They just don't make them like they used to.

Looks like nice work Bob!
Funny I was just thinking this weekend about how I could deaden the sound in my truck so that I could hear people more clearly when they're talking to me instead of constantly saying "eh??"
Maybe a project for the not so distant future.
Look forward to seeing it at Pismo

Highland,
Wow, thats great that the 2nd gens have the material in it already. I will say though that the McMasters and the carpet padding does make a big difference.
Keisur: i may have to look at Lowe's again. I'd definitely would like to compare the two. Is it really pliable?

What I have to do though is figure out how to make a bracket for the rear speakers. I used Steve Schaefers design for mine and they are too big and the pocket hits the bracket and won't let the door panel snap on. it sounds alot better though now that the speaker isn't just sitting in the hole with one screw holding it in. hehe and gaps on all sides of it sending all the sound into the door cavity. heh.

keisur,
i asked EVERYONE from the store manager down to the aisle "specialists" at Home Depot but no luck. I'll try the roofing section again. The pic would be great. Oh, if you could get HD's item code # for the Peel- N- Seal, that would probably be better than the pic.

Keisur,
Thanks, bud. If this product is superior to the McMaster's HTM, first I'm gonna cry like a baby and then I'm gonna kick my own ass!
