An other thing that can cause it but I have yet to see in a toyota is having the propeller on the water pump so rotted or corroded that it is not moving the water properly. The symtoms are normally it will get hotter at an idle/low rpms and cools down at high rmps.
If your shroud is missing it will heat up at a stop/low speeds and cool at high speeds.
I have also read that there is a clutch on the fan that could cause this if it was starting to go.

Heres my 91 pickup Regular cab 22re 5spd. 362,xxx kms on it now, engine was rebuilt at about 320,xxx iirc. Rebuilt all the suspension components in the front end and added 31s and 4runner rims. Have an aftermarket rear bumper I have to clean up before it gets mounted.

Deatiled the truck the other day for about 10 hours. Undercoating, wax, interior etc. Snapped a few pictures afterwards, heres how she turned out!

Thanks man! Your truck is awesome too. Ive always liked the looks of the 3rd gen pickups more than the tacos. My dad owns a 92 22re, (you can see it in one of these pics...http://www.yotatech.com/f83/1998-reg-cab-taco-187020/), and i love the "boxed" look of it. the only thing i dont like is the torsion bar suspension. the coil-overs are so much easier to lift.
