Question 4Runner hard to start

I came out from work the other day and hit the key in my 90 4Runner and the engine turned about 8 times and nothing happened. Tried again and this time gave it some gas and it belched some black smoke, stumbled and finally ran. (Like it was flooded)
Its does this everytime I start it, regardless of how long it sits, time of day, etc. Once its started it runs normal; doesn't miss, usual power, no noises.

Took it to the dealer today and they couldn't find anything. I took a service advisor with me when I went to start it and it started right up. Now I know how my customers feel!!

Took it home, let it sit 15 mintues, then left to run errands and it did the usual won't start routine.

Next week I'm leaving at the dealer overnight so they can have it cold the next morning. Any ideas as to what this might be?
Thanks,

Well, I think we can rule out the cold start injector.

It almost sounds like it could be it, but generally it only does it first thing in the morning in cold temps.

I had mine replaced Oct. of 2000.
For over a year I had hard starts like you mentioned when the weather was cold from Nov. through March.
Start, sputter, cough, then roared to life.

Changing it solved it.
But mine did not belch out any black clouds of smoke.

As a rule:
Black smoke = rich condition
Blue smoke = oil getting past rings or valve guides
White smoke = you're screwed, new head gasket time

It sounds like a fuel situation to me, and to rich.
The air flow meter perhaps under where my Stop sticker is?

I think that controls your lean/rich condition.
Where is Jay?
He'd have a better insight on this since the 3.0 he is very familiar with.

Hey Corey.. what was your truck doing before you had the injectors cleaned??

I am thinking
A) Coolant temp sensor
B) leaking injector
C) Leaking cold start injector

I am leaning towards the last 2.. Just for kicks, remove the battery cable over night and see if it does it in the morning..
If the injectors and pump have no power to keep fuel preasure it may not be able to flood it.. ( may want to bleed off the preasure at the fuel line just to keep what is in it from leaking in.. Then try it leaving the preasure on the line and batt disconected..

Battery issue

I also think it has something to do with the battery. My 2001 had a similar problem. You might want to try switching your battery out with a friend's to see if it is the battery itself or something that is being powered. If your friend's car h as trouble starting, get a new battery. If yours has trouble starting, it's obviously something wired.

Right before my injectors had to be pulled my mileage dropped down to 7 mpg
But the symptoms leading up to it were you would be tooling down the highway and when you would take your foot off the gas to slow down for traffic, the rig would start buckin' like a wild bronc.

What causes this is a bad spray pattern coming out of the injector at part throttle such as taking your foot off the gas.

As soon as it would buck I'd give it gas and it would smooth out again.

$475 later and it was all better
It's not cheap to have the dealer pull them out.
Two parties were involved.

My rig spent the night there, then first thing in the morning they yanked out all the injectors and sent them down the road a few miles to a specialty shop to ultrasound clean them and inspect the casings for cracks, and then flow test them.
They also flow test before too.

Ran super great after that was done.

Did you ever have a problem feeling like it was running out of gas?? My truck has done it twice, and I had over 1/4 tank left... But if I stop, it seems to go away?? WTF!! Damn Runner is making me wish to slap a 5.0 in there lately.... :pat:

No, it never acted like that.
Two of the injectors were pretty clogged though.

I now use that Amsoil injector stuff about once a month.
I pour 4 oz right into a full tank.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd say something's up with the fuel delivery. This morning, it cranked about 10 times before it sputtered to life. Then there was a strong gas smell for a few seconds.
Same thing happened this afternoon after it'd been sitting for 3 hours. I'll keep you posted on what they find, hopefully this time it acts up for them. At least runs once it gets going, sure beats walking

mine is doing the same thing but in the coldest weather it fires right up and if you leave it longer then 8 hours but on warm to hot days it takes about 30 to a minute to start up.
It'll run fine after that, that when i had the bosh spark plugs. Then switch to ngk and it was better, but still the same problem

have you checked the fuel filter?? i know our fuel systems are pressurized but they gradually loose pressure. its a quick 11 dollar filter that you would have to change eventually.. couldnt hurt to try. also when was the last time you did a tune up? on a 90's 4 runner i could see how the injectors could get clogged up but pull the filter and cut it open. you'll figure out really quick if they could be.
