WTF - Windows Update made some changes and messed something up??

This was kind of strange. Maybe I've had this set up wrong all along. I dunno. This is on my wife's machine, but mine and my kids were setup the same way. Mine now works again after a few reboots (after the windows update around 4am). My kids machine didn't miss a beat

My settings for getting on the web looked like this (under "Network Settings"):

Broadband
Verizon DSL
Connected, Firewalled
WAN Miniport (PPPPOE)
LAN or High-Speed Internet

Local Area Connection
Enabled, Firewalled
Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
Now, after the windows update, I've noticed that the machines that work no longer are using the "Broadband" connection (showing as disabled) but are getting the web through the LAN (actually, I've always had it set to connect through the LAN, but also had the Broadband connection enabled). Anywho, I can't get wifey's machine to automatically obtain an IP to use. I tried putting in the IP my machine is using and it didn't work - although I'm not sure if the subnet was right though.

I'd really prefer for it to automatically hunt it out, but I'm stumped. Any ideas??

is DHCP enabled on the machines that work (and, conversely, still enabled on the one that doesn't)? DHCP is the protocol that grabs IP, DNS, WINS and other info from a server -- in this case, your broadband router. PM me if you wanna discuss this a bit more. there are some options for forcing IPs since you're on your own little net...

edit: you can go re-enable the 'broadband' connection if you wish, i believe, via its properties sheet.

THANK YOU!! DHCP was disabled. I enabled it, cycled the modem and router and wala, it works (w/o the "broadband" - just using the LAN as I wanted anyway)

Something like this has happened around my apartment- we all chip in and share a broadband connection through a wireless router. I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but I have had to go fix people's DHCP and NIC settings. Within the past week, several computers seem to have changed "by themselves."
