Exclamation Wireless SECURITY WEP HACKED in seconds or minutes

An article written by Michael Ossmann from Security Focus groups explains why wireless encryption, named WEP, can be hacked.

A qoute: "In many cases, a WEP key can be determined in seconds or minutes"

You can read the first part of two artiles from Michael at http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1814

The solutions are;

> To change to WPA encryption (might have to buy hardware..access points.routers)
> Use IPSec *tunneling into a secured server from a client
> Turn off your wireless

I wish the best and good luck.

DUH..

Sorry I always find this stuff funny, Even more funny is when people leave all the settings at default, user name Admin Password Admin, and you've got free access to everything.

Allthough I never hack into anything, or even try seeing whats on peoples network drives, I do love being able to check my email and surf Yota Tech from my laptop in my truck.

Thanks Guys.

yesterday i was visiting one of our other offices for work and instead of asking for a cable to hook up my laptop i found an unsecure wireless network from a different company in the building.

now having it unsecure at home is one thing, but a company? thought it was strange and they should fix that, but i hope they don't because it saves me the trouble of pluggin into our network when i go out there

The Old Company I worked for Was in a place called the Seagrams Lofts, we had an office on the 6th and 1st floor.

Whenever I took my laptop on the elevator Id hook up to 4 differant wireless access Half of them were corporate.

If a wireless network has neither encryption, hidden SSID, offers no DHCP address, or lastly, doesn't indicate that it's for "autorized users" then it's probably ok. Why probably? Simply put, it's the intent of the network owner to decide wether the use of the wireless network should be available to the public. If the person (company) choose to make their wireless private then they must provide a level of security to restrict use. Even if the company or person allows public use of the wireless the USERS of the network are still bound by useage laws.

The article below by Robert Vamosi provide a good general use guide line.

sorry another post....

for all i'm concerned WEP is very secure....I downloaded all of the movie Matrix Reloaded and STILL didnt have enough IV's too obtain the WEP password....maybe you could hack in a business like I said if you laptop had excellent battery life and everyone was hard at work streaming hundreds of mb...other then that its impossible....
