Windows Defender

A beefed up version of Microsoft Antispyware:

Windows Defender Beta

If you don't have it, get it!

If you have Microsoft Antispyware installed, uninstall it first before installing this one.

Works fine so far, automatically removes AntiSpyware and doesn't stay resident on the taskbar. We'll see how it does after a week or two.

I think that's actually a glitch. MS recommends removing Antispyware before installing Defender. Of course, I ignored the recommendation to see what would happen. I noticed the same results you did. Out of more curiosity, I uninstalled/reinstalled Defender. Now mine won't update, reporting that there are no new updates, even though the definitions are 21 days old. Very strange.

So..... this is yet another fine example of MS creating something (MSAS), hyping it up, then tossing it (without notice) because they superceded it while it was in beta?

Nice. I hate MS.
