Wierd layers glitch between FF and IE

OK, I have a little site I whipped up for my family - basically just a bunch of links to my gallery and some future stuff.

I have some hidden layers that appear when you mouse over parts of the image - namely "us peoples"

Here's the strange part - and it's opposite of the issues I've heard other folks having.

Everything works as it should in Firefox, but in IE, only the menu associated with the child on the right is working. I've posted this on the Macromedia Dreamweaver site and have tried a number of things suggested. As in:
  • Each map line added an href for javascript - didn't work so I reverted
  • Tried adding a onMouseOut behavior - didn't work so I reverted
  • Tried changing the maps to onClick instead of onMouseOver - didn't work so I reverted

I think that's it. You can right click to view source. Page was composed using Macomedia Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Any ideas?

have you tried image maps? i know it's "old news" compared to layers, but heck, they do work.

here's your code. hope it works and doesn't get freaky here. dog first, then you, then to your left in sequence from there.

OK, I understand this, but where do I add my JS? At the end of each line as it is in the code now? What I don't understand is that I did layers on another one of my pages and it works fine in both browsers (www.cebsource.com). There's got to be one little thing that's throwing it out of wack for IE.

yes -- add this (in its variations per page and of course with your JS) to each <area shape> command:

TARGET="_blank" OnMouseOver="window.status='dosomething()'; return true" -- right at the end, after the quotes before the final >

i'll look at the original code and see if anything jumps out.

edit: do you think it has anything to do with the frames? i'd actually expect it's harder, not easier, to make it work, but i thought i'd throw that out there as a first guess.

edit #2: sorry -- i see that you *did* use a map for the page before. i'm suspecting something with the naming of the div, perhaps. i'll focus on that.

edit #3: haha. ok squelch that. the divs look fine, as one would expect from macromedia. i'm a bit stumped, sorry. as we used to say in ceramics class way back in college: just destroy it. you'll make the second better and faster anyway.

No frames on this page, just tables and layers. Do you think it might be that the map info is after the layer info? Just guessing at this point.

I had similar troubles with some pages I wrote at work. Mine seemed to be a problem with the z-index's not working in IE. Maybe try playing around with those, it looks like the only one that works has z-index=1. I'll take another look when i get to work & can try it on ie.

Well, I changed the z-index figures to see if that had any impact - nope...

Here's what is also strange. If you scroll over each of us from right to left, you'll see the pointer turns into a hand for the first child and the menu comes up. On the second child from right to left, the pointer turns into a hand, but no menu. On the rest of us, there is no change of the pointer to a hand at all. It's almost as if the JS stops working. The links at the bottom are also on layers that are always on.

something easy to try, for drew the div id= "drewlinks" and the select name="drewslinks" - for all the rest they have the same name. This seems really stupid to me, but i loaded your page onto my webserver at work & making the id's not match the names fixed it.

edit: not very clear, was I?

for yours
keep
<div id="mikeslinks"
but change
<select name="mikeslinks"
to
<select name="mikelinks"

Macromedia has all this stuff built in. Apparently it doesn't always work as desired... I created maps on all of the "subjects" in the photo as well as the icons at the top (they are all a part of my PSD image and not separate images)

When I mouse over the dog in FF, nothing. In IE, it opens another page with a Quicktime plugin to play the bark.

FF requires a plug in (I haven't been able to make that part work - that's the last thing to work on).

My IE on the other hand works fine. Maybe a setting in your IE Chris? Odd that you mention Quicktime, cause that's what FF wants to install to handle the sound byte.

The file is a .wav - is that the problem? Is there a better filetype to use?
