if you are running windows xp, you dont need the audio cable from the optical drive to the board, or card.. but with 98/me you do, 2000 im not sure.
as for the audio not working after putting the card in, you have to disable the onboard sound in the bios.. and then when the system boots up it should default to the card. if its a soundblaster live! card, then id say keep it in, but if its anything less, or older, use the onboard. and if its still not working, go to start>programs>accessories>entertainment>volume control, in there make sure that wav is turned up if that still doesn't work, let me know.. i'll take another crack at it

Well, I do have Windows Xp...
I killed the onboard audio though and sure enough, with the sound card working and the audio cable plugged in, I still don't have DVD audio.. Oh yeah and the volume is up, LOL I am beginning to think it's my cheapo DVD drive... an optorite dd1603 ........ I'm going to be asking them for technical support as well, once I get around to pulling it out to find all the fun numbers they ask for.

If it is the drive and you get a new one, make sure you stop by the Device Manager and click on the properties sheet for your DVD drive, and enable digital on it.
http://www.pnw4runners.com/temp2/digital_cd.jpg As mentioned by Green, XP needs no cable. XP is all digital. Best OS out there for Windows IMHO.

which application are you using? windvd, powerdvd? it's highly unlikely its dvd-rom related.. if your getting video, the data is being read.. if the data is being read.. the audio is too. my suggestion (if it's not already in there) would be to install windvd.

I was actually using the default - windows media player...
I'll throw in windvd and see if that helps. Edit: Well well now... WinDVD chokes when it gets to the blue "RATED R" screen (come on, it's Mel Gibson's PASSION...) and says there was an error, it has to go tell daddy (Microsoft). And now Windows Media Player is doing that too, whereas it wasn't before.

When I first read your first post, I assumed you were using the DVD drive for just audio playback, and not watching a movie.
I have two DVD burner drives that also double as my CD drives. I am not familiar with Win DVD as I use Power DVD. What sound card do you have? Are the drivers updated for both it, and Direct X for Windows?

Alright... I just installed PowerDVD and have made a tiny bit of progress:
I now have sound!! that is, until the DVD player crashes. Using Windows Media player, I can get all of about 1.4 seconds of the movie, and then it says there's an error. Power DVD won't even get that far, it gives me an error code 80900016 and asks me to email them. Windows takes the error report then gives me a link to a website saying there was a problem in Power DVD and that CyberLink Corp doesn't have a solution for it yet..... I tried uninstalling PowerDVD and installing just DirectX, but the sound was still missing. Seems like I have my options of either sound and error messages, or neither....

Do you also have DMA enabled for your drive? I can not remembeer where it is that you enable it, but most of the time drives are not enabled for DMA unless you specify it. Also check online with your DVD ROM vender to see if there is a firmware update. If so, download and install it. PS, one more thing. When I built my present PC a few Sept. back, the 56x CD ROM drive was defective. It often would crash games, and I would get errors. Your drive could be bad. If you know someone close buy with a drive, try borrowing it and see if it works. Swap out yours and put the pins on the back at the same setting for either slave or master to match the one you took out.

go to start>run> then type in dxdiag.. under display may sure under directx features directdraw, direct3d and agp texture are all enabled.
now, go to your display properties (right-click on desktop and go to properties), then click on the settings tab, now the advanced button.. under the troubleshoot tab max out the hardware acceleration. Had a very similar problem.. also, experienced one very similar at work, but i can't remember how we resolved it... ![]() edit - you'll need either windvd or powerdvd installed.. windows doesn't have its own decoder.. i prefer windvd.. but its up to the operator.. when doing the above 2 things, make sure one of the 2 dvd apps is also installed.

Alright...here's what else I've done:
Updated BIOS Updated any sound drivers Updated the ASPI layer thingamajig Checked up on DirectX (the AGP texture isn't available...couldn't figure out how to enable even with some google searches) Only other thing I can think of is that my dvd drive is plugged into an IDE controller card....I'll try un/reinstalling it...

curious.. why do you have it plugged into a card, and not directly to the board?

I have 2 hard drives, the motherboard only had one IDE plug...yes, I have old hard drives...when I get around to spending more $ on it I'll get the newer, faster non-IDE (SATA? is that what it's called?) drives.
So I tried plugging the DVD rom into the motherboard ... just using one hard drive... that didn't make any difference, same error

I would really try and get your hands on another unit to try out if you could.
I bet it is the drive.

That's what I did, just now... I plugged in my old drive one more time (plugged into the motherboard, just to make sure) and it too gives the same problem. I don't think it's the drive.
I may just give up on this for now...argh

Yep, I meant the DVD ROM drive.
Well, I finally found something that works, but it doesn't explain all my problems: the trial version of the DVD player made by Ulead seems to work, no problem. It plays just fine. Now all I have to do is pay the $30 for the real version...

Save some dough ya know
![]() The other apps should work. When was your last format? Idealy a PC should be formated once a year if not more to clear out the junk. I bet a fresh format and reinstall of everything will make it work just fine.

The fresh format was < 1 month ago, when I put in a new motherboard, processor, ram, the dvd rom, etc.
I'm betting it's the dvd rom since I have occasional problems with it not recognizing a dvd the first time it's inserted. And it was the cheapest one available... Oh well, it works for now.
