where is my hard drive space?

I have some large files I've been down loading on my desktop. Well I dont have alot of hard drive space so I'll download these large files and back them up on dvd.

Well once I download 5-10 of these files and back them up I'll want to clear some space and I'll delete them. Now when I deleted them I gain hardly any hard drive space.

I should have gained around 30 gig of space. But instead I gained around 300 meg! I have system restore off and when I deleted the files they said they would be permanantly deleted. So where the hell is all the hard drive space I need? Why is it holding on to it all and what do I have to do to get it back?

I rebooted, ran norton clean sweep (crap), disk defragmentor, disk clean up none of which helped any.

Its done this once before and I just kept deleting files until finally it went from 2 gig of free space to 40 gig of free space, quite a large jump. I cant do that again I dont have enough files I want to delete. Even still I should have around 30 gig of free space since I deleted around 8-10 4 gig files.

ok nvm, I figured it out. I ran disk defragment and then clicked on report and I saw a bunch of large files in recycler. I then purged all of Norton's files and I got all the space back.

I think Norton is a bigger headache then a help. When it expires I'm using AVGfree like on my laptop...

Which files were taking up all that space? The Norton files or the ones in your recycle bin?
