Vonage + TIVO =

I have been using Vonage since November. And I love it. The one thing I forgot about switching from landline to VOIP was the TIVO. With a little bit of reading and some luck I have converted my TIVOs to the Vonage digital with thanks to my wireless network. If anyone is thinking about switching from a landline phone to Vonage and have Tivo, let me know and I will help you out with the switchover.

So did you have a wifi capable TIVO or are you able to use a "phone line" only TIVO to still get your updates?

You can only use a Tivo series 2.

Ummm... if you're talking about networking then that's not really true. My Series 1 is quite happy without a phone line (i.e., getting updates over the 'net).

If you're talking about needing an analog phone line, then with a dialtone provider hanging off of the DSL line, either flavor should be quite happy.

re:

According to TIVO tech support a tivo series 2 is the only one that could be used "network ready".

TiVo tech suppport doesn't condone the common mods that are available for TiVo Series 1's. I have a network card in mine, a 512meg cache card in it, run a webserver on it (so that I can get to it from the outside world), and run a number of mods on it.

TiVo used to support the mods underground, but they've since decided that they want to ignore the cool stuff that people are doing with the machines.

Okay I see. I am fairly new to the TIVO family. My wife bought me the TIVO for Father's Day. Now I cant live without it.

Do you have any links to where I can 'mod' my stock TIVO?

Yeah, that's a common side-effect.

My guess it that you have a Series 2 machine, right? If so, that's less hackable than the Series 1, but there are still a number of things that you can do.

A good starting point for hardware mods is The 9th Tee.

Then, there are a couple of good forums online:

Have fun!
