video card pulling too much power from supply, causing a crash?

okay, most of the time when i play world of warcraft, it will not load. it will go into the game, then the computer will freeze, then crash. when i reboot it, it says the crash was caused by a device driver. someone told me it was cuz the video card (geforce 7950GT) is pulling too much power from the power supply (450W) and is causing the crash. remedy: buy a new power supply. has anyone ever heard of this? corey, i really hope you chip in on this one, ur like a cpu guru, lol.

first off get the correct drivers from GForce, not windows updates!!!

I had a machine that was eating video cards then the mobo went. I called Dell about it and they said the factory power supply was too small to power the video card and the fan that was on it. They replaced the MoBo and I upgraded to a 550 or 750 don't rightly remember but after that I was good. Shortly there after I went to a card without a fan, didn't want to take a chance. I'm also running 2 sata drives and 2 IDE drives and 1 burner. the case fan, CPU fan and 1 fan in the desk to keep the whole think cool...so I did have a lot running...

Have the game set the defaults for the hardware...this may help.
Also disconnect anything that you do not need (USB, internal HDs not being used for OS or Game) this might get you by for the time being.

Here is a little bit of info i had found:
6. Minimum of 500-600W Power Supply with a minimum of +12V @ 30A for all PC components in SLI mode

the System requirements are at the bottom of the page.

to small of a power supply will cause the computer to crash when playing games.
when i built my lil brothers computer, we used the power supply that came with his case. well it worked fine for surfing and what not, but as soon as you tried loading a game it would crash. so i unplugged (like mentioned above) stuff that wasnt essential, xtra fans and stuff. after that it played games fine. we ordered a 650w power supply so that he could have all his fancy lights and fans going while gaming.

what the specs on the system?

fully updated?

defraged lately? (shot in the dark, but ive seen it cause problems)

yea ill bet the dual core along with the vid card is what is killing your power. try unplugging some unnesessary fans and stuff, see if that helps ( it should).

if it does, its off to newegg for you

lumpy, i have a 7900 with a 420w ps and my system is stable. (but i bet if i had a dual core it wouldnt be).

When I had a similar issue I toasted 2 video cards an 1 MoBo. Who would have thought a video card would do something like this??? I just don't want anyone else having to go through the same headaches. I had a hard time tracking down the under powered ps causing the issue. I never bothered looking at the sys req's of the video card...now I know better.

With it being 64 bit and dual core, yes it does make a bit of difference.

go for it...$110 for a 1000Watts. Just check the spect's on it. Be sure it has all the connectors you need and or will need. some only have a few Sata connections...Also keep in mind for the PCI-E connectors.

You'll be good to go with that...Like I said make sure it has more than enough connectors...especially SATA and the PCI-E. May not need them now but you may later on. No sense on buying another one if you run out of plugs.

This one seems alright...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817338035

Just make sure. Hate to have you get a new one and it not have enough for ya.

This one does not have a P4 connector, check your machine most need the P4 connector for the MoBo. You may not just better to check.

It goes from the PS to the MoBo. It supplies power to the MoBo. Typically it's yellow and black and 4 pins.

Yeah.
I knew a guy with the same problem. He had already tried this and that before I arrived to drink some beers. I put my finger on the GPU and it was hot. Hot enough to iron clothes with. I left the access panel off and sat a 12 inch fan in front. It worked fine after that. Im not saying this will do it for you, just something to think about.

The same thing happened to another guy with microsoft flight simX. He could nose around the game but when he was ready to fly, his computer would either freeze during flight planning or freeze a few minutes into the flight.

Now that I think about it, it has happened to quite a few people. Different computers, different set ups, different games, same problem, heat.

if it were me...
I'd get at least 3GB RAM more if your MoBo will see it. 4GB would be ideal. RAM is cheap...
Up grade the HD...that's what I usually do. I don't reload I buy new HD and keep the old one just in case. After a while I copy all my stuff off wipe it and use is for a backup drive.
Also the all important PS which is what brought us all together on this one.

So $100 for the PS about $100 for HD and we'll say another $60 for RAM. I don't think it's a bad investment for a machine that could last you another 4 years or so...

But all in all you can run Vista as it sits now...I've been running it for over a year and it's alright. Need RAM. I would not get Vista home, I really do not like home versions of OS. I have XP Pro on my laptop and Vista Business on my desktop. Go Business or Ultimate when you go to make the swap.

I see a lot of rambling on about power supplies and what not, but not spec. If you want real help ill send you a pm with my phone number and i can talk you through all you need to know.

here is a link to get all your comp specs. http://cpuid.com/cpuz.php down load cpu-z 1.5.1 setup and run the app. it will show you all the hardware specs.
