tell me about routers

We're finally going to bite the bullet and get high speed internet, probably sbc dsl because it's the cheapest I can find.

I want my laptop to be wireless and the desktop to be wired. I know nothing about routers, what do I need to know? What would you guys recommend?

Also, what about wireless cards for the laptop? What do I need to know about them. Both the desktop and the laptop have ethernet ports.

All you need to know for the router is:
http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=35&prid=610

All you need to know for the laptop is:
http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=611&scid=36

Sometimes you can find them bundled together.

I'm on SBC...have been for years. Fast and stable.

For some reason my Linksys wireless router would act up on both our other computers. The internet connnection will disconnect after a few minutes of use, and not reconnect even though there was fairly good signal strenth. Ive tried some of the fixes on the Linksys site with no effect. Not sure what the problem is?

I used to have linksys but recently upgraded to 11g and went with Netgear.

Excellent range and fairly easy to get up and running.

I also recently got a wireless router. I got a Netgear unit that has a USB port on it to add a standalone drive in the future. Unfortunately, my unit is defective and is being replaced (free of charge - got it through Amazon), since Netgear said get it replaced and opened a "case number" for me. I liked it while it was working though....

Thanks for the info guys, at least I know a little something about routers now. Seems like router companies have a quality assurance problem. I ran across a thread on pirate where everybody complained about every router on the market. I've got an idea of which brands to buy, though.

I do not have a wireless model, I have a "wired" Netgear 614, and it has never given me a problem.

If I were to set up the 2nd desktop and my laptop wireless, I'd go Netgear again.

I think most routers these days pretty much are the same just buy what you can get the best deal on I saw last week they had a netgear wireless G router and usb wireless adapter for like 60 bucks after a rebate, now thats a deal. I currently al also a wirless B user on the older Linksys router thats worked flawless since day one.

That's what you get for using the New Posts button and not noticing it's in the computer section.

I recommend the Linksys Wireless G router....I've had it since if first came out and I used it for around 1 1/2 years using Cable internet now I have it operating on DSL...no problems.....

I have 1 wireless desktop, 1 wireless laptop, and my wired xbox running though it without any problems....

Another vote for Linksys B or G. I am very happy with my system. If you do have any problems, a free phone call to India is just minutes away.

We have a 1400 sq. ft. house and I can walk all around the house, including the yard and the signal has never dropped below very good. We picked ours up for $65 after rebates at Best Buy.

I would be able to tell you but I upgraded to service pack 2...and all those settings have dissapeared or been moved and I cant find them for the life of me....double click your little internet connection icon down in the taskbar and start there.....its a little check box that says "Enable IE 802.1x blah blah blah"...just uncheck it reboot and try it out, solved my problem...what mine would do is go online for like 5 minutes then just drop me and reconnect, it was extremely annoying and linksys tech support was lost so I just started trying things and that solved the problem.....thats all I can do for ya....sorry and good luck....

I got my new Netgear replacement router today from Amazon - they are a joy when it comes to returning problem items. They send UPS to get the old and cross ship a new one. Hopefully I'll have better luck with this one...
