Yes, I own the full blown version which allows you to update it.
The demo only lets you update the def files once. Spy Sweeper is better than the free program SpyBot. Spy Sweeper found one on my rig which SpyBot did not detect. But SpyBot is still a very good program. PS, I also moved this to our PC forum, as it pertains to computers, and will be more easily found.

Pop up ads?
Spyware aps don't prevent pop up ads from popping up, you have to use a "pop up killer" ap to stop that such as the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, or run Mozilla or FireFox for your web browser, as they have it built in. The next gen IE will have that option with Service Pack #2 coming out later on. The Google Toolbar though I am not impressed with it at all. I still get pop ups and pop unders showing up all the time. |

Popups are not always caused by spyware. Lots of sites us popup scripts in there web page code. however spyware can give you popups just for the heck of it. or when your not even surfing. with win2k and up there is a program called windows messager (not to be confused with msn messenger) that was originally designed to allow system IT's or admins to send out network wide messages, however many popup crooks have found ways to use that built in service since the default setting is turned on, to their advantage. some popups killers and the like come with options to turn the messanger service off or you can do a google search and with some carefull clicking and just a tad of knowhow you can turn it off yourself. btw this only stops the popups that use that gateway.

Can you take a screenshot?
Push PrtScr on your keyboard, then open up your favorite graphics app. Paste in the screen capture and save it as a JPG, then attach it here for us to see. If you use IE with MSN, try the Google Toolbar first to see if it gets rid of the ads. http://toolbar.google.com/ |

the best program that i have found for removing spyware is called adaware. you can get it free from download.com i believe. it is much better that spybot, i have both. also once i started using mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer, i stopped getting it.

Greetings,
I would use as many spybot removal tools as you can. Seems that they all don't get all the rogue software. I would also recommend the Google tool bar. It has a free pop-up killer and seems to work really well. I would also reccommend you turn off your Active X and Java software as this is two of the main distribution methods. You can turn them off in your browser controls. I highly recommend the browser called "opera." It was written by really security savy folks and they have a free version as well as a paid for version. its kinda cheap and works really well giving you control of your browser as opposed to MS Exploder, oops Explorer. www.opera.com Hope it helps. More on IE.
I use it, and like it very much. Also have FireFox, but I still use IE. http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3513_7-5142616.html

ehh... I know it 'cause I lived in the midst of it. I've been doing networking since the days of ARPANET, LONG before The Internet.I'm an old fart coder that clearly remembers hacking my 300 baud modem to get to 450 baud.

Gene Plantz (11 line system running on AT PC's) is still around in the world, he's been seen on The 'Net hanging out on automated weather system forums. He had the IBBS up until 1991.Ward & Randy (_the_ original CBBS) was up online until the late 90's, 1995 I think. Wanna a throw-back? Check this: http://software.bbsdocumentary.com/IBM/DOS/IBBS/ and... http://bbslist.textfiles.com/312/oldschool.html (I'm in there, I was online from 82-86) and, if you're _that_ old.. you may get a kick out of knowing that my name is in the xmodem source code. I did a lot of work on the wildcard name handler.

Hey, I'm an old fart also, and yes I screwed up on Mozilla and Netscape and yes, I'm not an old coder but I remember the ASCII strings to control the modems, and yes I can do subnets in my sleep and write ACL's both reflexive and not. But I refuse....absolutley refuse to write code again. Its just too cheap to buy!!
And yes, I own a T-Shirt from NERDGEAR.com that has a complete subnet table that when folks see look and say...HEY WHATS THAT? 127.0.0.1 0.0.0.255 MV |

My MSN screen name is "127.0.0.1". ![]() When I first fired that up about two years ago, all my friends thought they were being hacked. It just looks too weird sitting up there on a buddy list!

Greetings,
127.0.0.1 would look funnny as a IM name (wish I would have thought to use it), I used to have "localloop" as a screen name since the first time I saw it on a network, I thought I was hacked. Anywho, guess we are both dating ourselves. I remember when I paid 700 bucks for a Hayes ultra smart modem at 9600 and thought it was the bestest. Now I work on OC3/ATM, wonder how long till they are slow also. Who woulda thunk!!! MV |
