Retrieving deleted files

So I accidently deleted some important files today. Really important files.

I had a program to restore deleted files but I cannot find it and I cannot remember the name of the program.

Recommendations?

Thanks.

The most important thing is to immediately stop using the drive from which the files were deleted. Any use increases the risk of them being overwritten. Once that happens, no commercially available software will be able to recover them.

If you're browsing the Internet on that computer now, stop! Use a friend's computer or one at work to download some undelete software. I'm guessing that anything you download will probably restrict the amount of data you can recover. You may have to buy something to get full functionality.

I'm sorry but I don't have any specific recommendations on software. I just thought it was pretty important to make sure you knew not to use the computer until you can run an undelete program on it.

If you have Norton utilities installed you can go to your recycle bin and go into Norton protected files. Have you tried you recycle bin anyway?

Are you running XP?
I remember hearing that you can go to the recovery mode and default back all your settings and files to a previous date or something.

XP restore will only recover system setting, Such as regisrty, device setting, ini files, It does not touch user files.

Power Quest Lost & Found is a great tool. I use it all the time... Oh Oh I just did a search for it and it look like Norton Bought them out and it is no longer availible... But see if you can find it hiding on the net somewhere.

And YES Dont use your computer

The XP rollback function is only for system files to for anything else you create or install and you need to have set a recovery point to use it.

If your running XP just goto your recylce bin most people don't clear it out as often as they should just right click on it there and tell it to restore the file....
If using otehr O/S you will need a third part application lots of free ones out there just goto a place like download.com or tucows.com and do a search for free ones or shareware ones, even some of the pay one will have a 30 day eval to test out.

I was not able to make use of any of the programs recommended.

All were demo version unless otherwised purchased and with demo, you are not able to retrieve flies, only look at them.

I was not going to pay.

Bummer I cannot find the program I had. It would find anything deleted.

Thanks for the help anyways folks.

POBOY, I owe you big time!

If you're in PHOENIX this December, I definitely will owe you lunch.

That is the same program I had but who knows where it went since it's been months since I had gotten on my computer.

MIKRON, thanks for your offer, but I think I've solved problems with POBOY's help for now.

Only thing I am having problem is converting the file to what is was before. It has some type of wierd extension at the end. I'm sure I can figure it out.

no problem...I should be moving to PHX mid December . I just purchased plane tickets for Sept 4th-12th to do some job/house hunting! Pretty stoked!

GL figuring the rest of it out...I beleive this is the website if you need further assistance. It's been so long since i last did a file recovery with it, Im not sure what you are looking it. I "THINK" It should be something with an underscore and a .junk extension or something? you need to replace the underscore with the first letter of the file and the extension with the original extension. So if the file was christmas.doc - it may show up as _hristmas.tmp ...change it to christmas.doc

Not sure if that helps you any, but its worth a shot. Make a copy of the deleted file before you mess with it too much.
