hey guys,
I have a radeon 9000 pro 128mb video card and the fan is making all kinds of noise... I've been using it for around two years and it's been making noise for a year and a half at least. In the past month it got a lot worse so I took the fan off the card and tried cleaning it, didn't do any good.

this morning when I turned the computer on I didn't notice the noise, so pulled the comp out and checked the card.. the fan wasnt running! I moved it back and forth a bit and it started running again and I think has been for the rest of the day.

SOO do you guys know if I can get a replacement fan for it? and if I could just order it somewhere online hopefully..?

I had the same card did the same thing. its a cheap arse fan with plasic bearings and it went out. My big problem was getting the plasic fasteners off. ATI wont sell another fan and no one make a direct replacement. I shimmied on a thermaltake. 30mm fan? and soldered the old connector on and got it to work. ended up getting a radeon 9200 128 without a fan. IMO it has just as good graphics without the noise and its cheaper. put in a card fan just below the card it the whole system runs cooler

Those fans can be cleaned and lubed (I do it on all my fans when they begin to make noise and a good cleaning can make it last another year before it needs it again) but you need to pull the whole thing apart to do it. Most of them are just held together by a little plastic spring washer which you pry off (make sure not to damage it because you will need it on reassembly). Then I just use 3in1 oil on the bearings and any parts that may have friction.....you would be surprised how dirty they get inside so it is no wonder they just stop spinning after a while. Cleaning it is cheap but if you want an easy fix then just keep looking for a replacement.

that really sucks that there's not a direct fit replacement. I think I'm going to try taking it apart and cleaning it. I only have an electrical cleaner spray and silicone spray.. never heard of a 3 in 1 oil, where could I find something like that?

thanks for the input, gotta keep the comp runnin so I can make my daily visits to yotatech

Im not 100% sure about this fan,

But I know this applies to most Power supply fans, Bay Fans and some CPU fans,

If you take the fan off and flip it around there is usally a round sticker on the backside. Pull that sticker off and under in is a hole to put oil in. Sometimes there is a rubber seal you have to pull off... 3 in 1 oil works well or sewing machine oil or gun oil

For some reason the manufacturer doesn't seem to install enough oil when they build these things. Whenever I build a PC I always lube the fans up..

This won't work on the Cheaper brushless fans....

Other than that you can get a PCI Slot fan and mount it under the Video Card. Or Fab up fan to fit.

Fan card This could would work but the problem is the fan is part of the heat sink so you can blow all the air you want over it but yur not getting enough heat away from the video processor your trying to cool. now if you put in some sort of heat sink on the procesor then a fan card it would work awsome
with this card I would acually try one of these no fan needed. 3 of my freinds use and they work awsome

just buy any ol' small fan off tigerdirect.com (i know not the cheapest but very reliable and the fans are like 5-10 bucks)...just get a fan that uses the pc power and you wont even need to solder......or even better get a new video card....
