Depends on what kind of memory you had before. More memory doesn't really equate to anything being "faster" unless faster means that programs start faster, you don't have as many hangups, etc. And no, you don't really need to tweak anything on your computer... I don't think. I'm sure others will chime in on this topic, hope I helped you some in the meantime.

Defrag the drive... but thats something you be doing all the time any way.

If you benchmark the system it will preform better.. Probably not very noticable however to you..

The memory will start to shine threw with number crunching appz or higer end Graphics programs... say Adobe Illustrator while your playing with a couple 100 meg files.

Your average stuff you will hardly notice.

You'll only really notice a difference if you have alot of memory intensive programs open, or alot of different proccesses running, or playing a high usage game.

I don't do any of the above, so 512 suits me just fine

if you went from 512 to a gig you wont notice any speed difference except in game thats a memory hog....MAYBE you'll notice it in doing graphical work....but pretty much the normal person wont notice the difference between 512 meg and a gig of ram.....if you computer is fast enough then go out and get doom 3 or something and get the use out of it, if you dont you wasted your money

are you running windows xp. If you are press conrol+alt+del and under performace it willl show you how much ram your using. when your system is sitting there doing nothing with nothing open it will use 89-250mb depending on how you set windows up. Run msconfig and turn off alot of your start up aplications and get a boost in performance. Defrag. I recomend getting a third party defrag program since windows just sucks. SOme sort of software to fix the errors windows creates and unless your have way too much time onyour hands something to clean the drive up. widows has a program built in for this as well but it only deletes what windows want to delete. Basically get a copy of norton systemworks or mcafree fix it utilities. Alot of people will say you don;t need it but its becuase they've never used it. Even a fresh install of windows will benifit in performance with these software pakages. Usually 110% performance increases.
Increasing the RAM will only benifit you if your using it. I was fine will 256 MB of ram until I got into video and picute editing. then I needed 512 since I was using 410mb on a regular basis. Then on games like battlesfeild veitnam it it using 838 MB of ram so I went to 1 GB And of course only notice the differnace when I'm using the needy programs
