Question about connecting two computers, without a router

Well, we just got a new family computer. The old computer still has a bunch of stuff on it that i want off of it and on my laptop. My laptop is connected wirelessly through the router. What i want to do is, if its possible, dirrectly connect the old computer to my laptop and rob all the files off of it that i want. Is this possible, or do i need to set up the old computer back by the router and actually go through and network them together. My computers are NOT networked, the router is only used to share an internet connection, as i have my own printer and whatnot. I would like to do this without having to network them together, but if thats what i have to do, so be it.

Yes it is possable if both have a cat-5 connection (ethernet), you will have to get a cross-over cable in order to do so. then just use XP file transefer wizard. should be just as easy to set up as a network.

Red's correct about cross over cable.

Here's an overview of what the cable looks like.

Another way to connect to Pc's together without a router is using either a switch or a hub. Both devices will bridge the ethernet PC connections. And, you use regular CAT-5 cable.
