New HP...opinions

So Im in the market for a new desktop and thinking about this HP. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1130986697065
I plan on working with Autocadd quite a bit, and maybe a few other design programs, but no 3d animation. Besides that, just the usual pics, music, internet and MS office/Project. Seems to me to be a decent setup.....just wondering about it being a HP.
What do u guys think?
What do u think about HP in general, any problems with them, or other comparably priced brands I should look at?

I'm not crazy about HP, but the specs on that machine look pretty good for that price. I'm all about the AMD64's right now, and I think it'd be really good for Autocad. I usually say "Get a Dell", but I've known a few people who haven't had any problems with HP. I can't keep recommending someone who won't keep on top of the latest technology just because Intel bullies them. So... give it a shot. Make sure it's got a good warranty though.

Gawd I HATE HP... And when they bought Compaq, they didn't do the right thing and KEEP Compaq's quality, they pitched it for their old crap.

ugh...

I have MANY stories of driver issues, adding standard cards that won't work because of incompatibilities with the crap they put on the motherboard, HORRIBLE support (but then, most everyone sucks these days), lousy performance/$$$ ratio... ugh.

Buy Dell. They're the last good one.

Sit on GotApex and watch for the deals to come up. Or, for the level of box that you want to buy, build your own. Pick the case, MB, processor, RAM, video card, etc. and piece it together. You'll come out with MUCH more machine.

(looking over my shoulder, I see Chris replied while I was writing this)

Compaq had quality? From personal experience I wouldn't believe it we had 3 (the second 2 were warranty replacements) and 2 of them literally caught fire while using internet or word and the third had a melt down in which the chip melted. Our Dell is a POS too the dam thing is always making some kind of noise and likes to shut off or restart when it feels like it. It also won't let me load an new programs (hasn't for about 3-4 months) it can only run the stuff thats been on there since we got it, can't download stuff or anything.
I'd personally love a media centre PC I like the idea. We've had a couple HPs and they both semmed pretty good and we had no problems with them. The next PC I buy though will be custom built or I'll just buy the components myself to save on labour.

Our comp at work is a compaq. Awesome...AWESOME system. HP..eh not so great. I'm not a huge fan of them. But then again I'm a fan of building my own systems. But I know thats not for everyone.

The specs are pretty good on that and should serve you well in terms of your CAD and what have you. I agree with Chris AMD64's are where its at though.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Kinda expected some HP bashing, anybody have good things to say about them?
Big fan of the Athlon 64 and the 3700 2.2GHz sounds good to me with the setup. Dont know if I can find a similar setup for the price, Anybody?

I'm talking WAY back Geoff, circa "my days living with servers". Probably 1990-1996ish.

HP kept the Compaq banding for a while after the buy-out, but the quality just fell off the edge. I think you can still find "those" Compaq's buried in the back rooms at Best Buys, but they suck as much as the HP's they are.

Umm, while a predominate 4x4 forum isn't the best place to get a sampling, considering that most replies thus far _are_ bashing HP, why are you so set on one? If price is the only consideration for you, then have at it, but keep your fingers crossed.

Are you tossing out building your own?

Well, i kinda need a computer now. Mine crashed, and I need something to get on the internet with and search for jobs. I planned on building one, but dont really have the time now to do it right.
I'm really not set on that one, but it has the Athlon 64 like I said, plenty of memory for me and the setup looks pretty good....and it comes with a monitor and printer for under $600 after rebates.
I wasnt saying that you shouldnt bash HP, really just asking opinions. Until the past few years, I wouldnt have considered a HP, but everyone I've talked to with a newer one with the Athlon has nothing but good things to say about them, so I dont know.
What would you suggest with comparable specs and the Athlon or P4 for under $600?
I couldnt really come up with much.
Thanks again for the replys.
