ok so after about 4 months of messing with stuff on a wish list this is what I have come up with for a new computer. I need this to be pretty future proof and I think I have a pretty good set up. Let me know what you guys think.

That looks like a pretty sweet setup. I love my Core2 Duo which I got closer to when they first came out. I use my PC for a lot of video transcoding and you can't beat having 2 cores to keep your desktop responsive for other task like wasting time on Yotatech! What types of heavy applications do you run? If you are planning on getting a new case as well, I suggest one with 120mm fans. They are HUGE and move a lot of air without being noisy. My new PC has the smaller fans (90mm I believe) and the thing is noisy as heck.

Ahh, so you will be running Linux on this thing huh? I am running Ubuntu 7.04 on mine and it runs like a champ. The only problem I have is using suspend to ram. Sometimes it won't wake back up if it has been suspended for a long time. Hopefully upgrading to 7.10 should help with that. But anyway, you'll love the dual core setup on an operating system that can really take advantage of it. Even you virtual machines in VMware will be dual cores if you want to set them up that way.

I will have at least my 500 gig sata drive in there. I have another 160 gig ide drive but I don't think I can run that and my ide dvd drive off the same ide cable. If I can't I will stick that into my myth box so I wont really loose the space. I have been running ubuntu since 5.10 beta. I am running 7.10 not it is great. Unfortanatly my laptop still has suspend issues even with the new 7.10 This fixes it though and I have no issues. I just can't justify the cost of the quads. They are quite a bit more. I have an E6550 at work and I have not been able to touch the 2 gigs of ram or the processing power yet, but I don't play games ore edit videos on that machine. I think this will be plenty for me for now. I will upgrade in a few years to a quad if I need too and I can always stick more ram in. It is always getting cheaper.

If you want to build a good computer then I suggest you need a more and better power supply, 500w may handle all that but will cause crash. A 1000watts should do fine.

There is no way a 500w Thermaltake wish crash with that setup. They make some quality stuff.

you are kidding right? According to this 388W is recommended. I have read about several people running a similar set up and the 8800gts with a 500 watt ps. That power supply has ratings better than almost any other ps out there.

these dang video cards are what suck up all the juice these days. Processors and Ram use less power than ever. 500watts is MORE than enough for that setup

I am running a 500 watt Thermaltake with my 2.4C chip, 2 GB RAM, 256 MB EVGA NVIDIA 7800 vid card, two TV tuner cards, two Sony DVD drives, one SATA drive (C), one PATA drive (D) and extra case fans, it runs it great.

yeah, 500 watts is plenty enough.
onesojourner, The setup looks pretty good but i would go with a Corsair HX520w power supply instead. The modular design frees up a lot of room and makes for a really clean install. My bro has been running his nonstop without a single issue and so have I. They come with a 5 year warranty too! You can get one for $99 w/free shipping if you use google checkout at Buy.com |

just a quick update on this. I am waiting for the video card (asus 79gs top) and the ram. should be here by the end of the week maybe the start of next. I just figured it all up after rebates and it came out just under 450 bucks shipped.

Are you going to game with this too?
You might think about upping the vid card to a 7800 GT. I Was all dead set on the 7800 GTS 640 MB one until I learned today that the 512 MB 7800 GT blows away the GTS one, even though it has more MB. http://www.yotatech.com/f98/how-does...-sound-133230/

you mean the 8800 series don't you? the 7900 series would smoke the 7800. I am going to wait for the 8800gt to drop in price so I will upgrade that later. the 7900gs top out performs the 7900gt. It should play the games I want to play pretty good. I just can't justify the cost difference between $80 for the 7900gs top or 250 for the 8800gt. I think the 8800gt will drop a good amount over the next year. right now I have a 5200... I can barely play hearts.
