Need help with Inspiron laptop!

Alright well my sister is looking for a new laptop because her desktop computer is old and worthless...

I think I found a pretty good deal on a laptop...

All she is going to use it for is papers, the internet, and a little music maybe 100 or less songs...

She's not going to play games or anything like that...

It comes right from Dell...

Here are the specs:

Inspiron 1300 Notebook
Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73GHz/2MB Cache/400MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
Operating System Backup & Recovery PC Restore recovery system
LCD Panel 14.1in WXGA Display
Memory 512MB DDR2 SDRAM 2 Dimm
Hard Drive 40GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
Combo/DVD+RW Drives
FREE! 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability
Graphics Card Integrated Intel® Media Accelerator 900 Graphics
Primary Battery 4-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (29 WHr)
Wireless Networking Cards Dell 1370 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps)

PRICE: $639

Would that be okay for her do you think? She doesn't need a lot of memory so I think the 40 gigs would be okay... the deal expires at 12am tomorrow!

Any input would be great!
Thanks

Looks like a good config for what her needs are, and if you think the price is right all the better.

I did see that the processor was a little slow, but if it makes not difference to her... like she does not plan to do much processor intense things than who cares? But if some day she might be doing more, than look for a faster one now because it becomes difficult later with a laptop. I am not sure about the price maybe somebody that has been shopping for a laptop could chime in.

ok, whatever you do, do not buy the dell inspiron 700m because there are some keys that are 1/2 size. it'll drive you batty for that reason alone. however, it is a good laptop esp if you are an occassional or frequent traveler. good bang for the buck

Alright thanks Bob... but do you think the keys on the Inspiron 1300 are normal sized? Or are they all like that?

ian,

i dont know about a 1300, but its very obvious when you look at the keyboard of a 700m vs a regular keyboard. its the comma, period and question mark keys that are 1/2 sized

for the internet and word processing, that processor is lightning fast... i know lots of people that are still getting by on 350mhz processors on win98. and xp on 800mhz processors. If you keep it clean, it'll run good.

a 1.7ghz celeron is like a 1.2 ghz p4.. main thing to be concerned about with xp is memory. you will want a minimum of 256, recommended of 512 if you want a pleasurable computing experience. which you have, so you're good!

as for the price.. i wish i only spent that much on my laptop, then spent twice that on a desktop for gaming, would of saved $1000... and for the keyboard. don't worry it will be a standard keyboard, that model can also come with a 15.4" screen so no worries. overall sounds like a sweet deal.

If you need it to last a few years spend a few more bux and get slightly better components. Because with how fast technology advances nowdays its always a good idea to get a litter better quality to start with.

Just do your best to make sure it stays virus/spyware clean. A Celeron can't handle infections as well as Pentiums. Cleaning one is SO frustrating. Keep it clean and you'll be happy.

D'OH! I thought I read Celeron somewhere. Nevermind, you're good. Keep it clean anyway though.

Yeah there was another one on the Dell site that had a Celeron so that's probably what you saw...

I would keep it clean for sure... but who knows about the sister hah...
