My new setup

so i got a new computer. my laptop is starting to fail, the fans sounds like they are powered by a small 50cc honda, the computer wont recognize new hardware plugged in, DVD drive is broken....etc. basically its time for some new toys.

so i picked up a Dell Optiplex GX270 Small Form Factor (its tiny):
2.8GHz P4 800mhz bus,
512MB Ram (i'm going to upgrade this to 2GB)
80GB Harddrive.
a total of 8 USB ports!!!!!!
Best part it was free!

So its set up downstairs in the basement along with all of my external hard drives, printer, and stereo. I then use my work laptop and Remote Desktop. its slicker than . i can walk around the house and basically have 2 laptops in one. music can either be played through the speakers on the laptop, OR through the stereo its hooked up.

I may buy a used monitor from work, but i dont think i would use it that often because we dont use the downstairs, i'd rather be upstairs in the living room.

Well for free that is a great deal, however like you said, upgrade that RAM, 512 is barely enough to move the frickin mouse nowadays. And 8 USB's is pimp.

Chris, if you are looking for some local RAM, check out www.infotechnow.com in Federal Way.

I was going to oder all of my stuff from Newegg for my new gaming PC I just built over the holidays, but this store was cheaper than the 'Egg.

Good service, and the store is always packed.

I too have gotten all excited again about PCs with the new build and the new Dell 1720 laptop I picked up.

I discovered how to use the webcam yesternight, and I got the new Windows Messenger Live, and talked with my son with the cam and built in mic this morning using Messenger Live.
He is just over in Puyallup, but it was fun.
His Dell laptop has the built in mic and cam too.

This will be cool since my oldest son is in Iraq still, and I will be able to do the Messenger chat with him now without having to type.
He has the webcam an mic setup there too.

careful with GX (especially with 270s).

known problems are capacitors leaking or blowing up and killing the mobo...

google it...
