My CD drives are gone!!

I went to pop in a CD to listen on the PC tonite and it said there is no player on this PC. I went to my computer and sure enough the D: and E: drive which were my CD/RW drive and my DVD drive are not there!! WTF!! Are there drivers for these that I can reload or something? Also there's a CD in one drive that won't come out now....what's the deal anyone know?

check your IDE cables (the typically grey ribbon cable that connects your CD/DVD drives to your motherboard)...may have somehow come loose.

sounds like a dead power cable...

even if the s/w driver died, at least you could eject.

check all conections.

Well after a couple of restarts they are back but I still can't eject the disk out of the one drive. Any ideas? I'm about ready to bust out a screwdriver and pry the dang thing open... I want my CD back!

turn everything off.

using a large paperclip where you straightened out about 2" of it, stick it in front.

there is a small hole where when you insert the paperclip, it will "eject" the tray out.

Sounds like either a power cord or just a burned out CD-ROM. If both of them are not working then maybe something is wrong with the IDE cable. Sometimes if the cable is plugged in backwards then they will not eject.

Check both drives for power by opening them, you say at least one won't open so we know that one has lost power. Most likely they're on the same cable and that one is set for "master", the motherboard can't see the "slave" drive without the "master" present.

Ah, now that I read this I'm guessing the one with the CD stuck in it has failed. Use the paperclip trick to get your disk out.

Take out the CD drive and test it by plugging in the power from something else you know is working....I'd be the drive gave out before the power cord went bad....
