Figured this would get more hits in it's own thread rather than put it in the tips section. Configure Firefox to make it faster! Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up: 1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries: - network.http.pipelining - network.http.proxy.pipelining - network.http.pipelining.maxrequests Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several requests at once, which really speeds up page loading. 2. Alter the entries as follows: Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true" Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true" Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once. 3. Finally, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

Technically that wasn't fixed - the bug is still open. What you're seeing is that some sites (including YT) have moved away from using the no-cache tag in their HTML, thus "unbreaking" FF.


Enabling pipelining can also be done (among other things) through the Tweak Network Settings extension available from:

??? Do you mean that the text in Tools | Options | General | Home Page keeps changing?

Can you define when it changes? i.e., you set it to http://www.cnn.com, and then when does it change? Is it there after you click OK and come back into the dialog? What about after you exit the browser and reload it?

What does it change to?

Can you confirm that this is the 1.0 release version? (click Help | About and you should see "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0" at the bottom of the pop-up)

I did the install. I like it, it is the same thing as above + some other tweaks. Install it then close the browser. Open Firefox, Tools-->Tweak Network Settings-->click OK--> click Power-->click Apply. That does the above tweak + some but if you just check the 2 pipeline boxes it also does the above without the + some.

Keep an eye on the MaxRequests number... You can cross a line where you start bogging down the computer and/or line trying to maintain a large number of pulls at once. It's not strictly about line bandwidth or CPU speed, it can also be about resources (memory, open objects, handles, etc).

Play with the numbers... you'll know when you cross the line.

It sets to 8 with the power button and that is where I left it. The Max connection number went form 24 to 40.

Be careful as this doesn't play nice with proxies or proxy firewalls. The browser sends too many requests and the firewall can't handle them all. How do you know if you have this problem?
Firefox will work WORSE after the tweak is made. As stated earlier, throttle down your requests.

fwiw, I just tripped over this thread where a number of changes are posted to make FF faster. Some of the params are tweaked by that Tweak Network extension, some aren't.


The first message also includes a pair of links where you can test your rendering speed and page loading speed for comparing before/after changes.
