Looking for a flatscreen monitor on the cheap

I'm a electronic illiterate so pardon my ignorance. I'm moving and want to get rid of my 200lb 20" old school monitor. Anybody know of any sites that sell flatscreens at a reasonable price? Not looking for anything fancy just trying to save some weight and space on the PC desk. Lots of sights out there that sell them but I know it's super easy to overpay for electronics.

here is what my girlfriend and I did:

First, decide if you want quality, or low price. Come to terms with the fact that the better quality it is, the more $$$ you are going to spend.

Then start reading. Read consumer reports, online information, and research the resolution and other facts about each style of monitor. Once you decide on a brand and size, start researching model numbers. Find a monitor that fits your specs, for what you do with your computer. Obviously a $1000 gaming monitor isn't necessary if you are just surfing the net on occasion.

Once you find the monitor you want, and the model number you are happy with, you can start price shopping. Often times just googling the model number will show you many different prices, and the best places to buy them. For my girlfriend and I, we did all our research online, then we were able to find an LCD TV at Video only for ~$150 cheaper than anywhere else....including the "going out of business 'sale' " that circuit city was having.

I deal with New Egg a lot, work and home. I go between both Tiger and New depending on what I want and current deals. I go with these guys before I hit BestBuy any day. Also check Amazon.com as well. Get some good buys there as well. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw...20+lcd&x=0&y=0

Acer have good products for cheap...I have not purchased them but I know people who have. Normal everyday web surfers can get a nice 20" or 20" wide for under $200.

New Egg has a lot of free shipping. Read, read, read!!! I prefer the high res If you don't like the small print then go with a lower res, they will be cheaper but not quit as crisp.

My old work neighbour picked up a 28" LCD from Tigerdirect for $379 a few weeks ago. That thing is SWEET! Make sure you check and compare the online price to the instore price at Tiger... in store was almost $100 more... he had to get a manager but he made it stick... take a print out of the on line screen with you. He called in and arranged to pick it up and pay at the store and they still tried to make him pay the higher price... good store though great prices...

Fry's Electronics also has good prices. They have a store down in Burbank that I go to occasionally. Newegg is also a good one I have ordered from.

I have an Optiquest Q9(Viewsonic's budget line) 21" 4:3 LCD monitor and it is generally good, but it recently started having trouble powering up after about 1½ years of daily use. I did some reading and they have a tendency to overload some capacitors in the power supply circuit. Two of them were bulging and one actually ruptured. I was able to replace them myself with spares and fix the problem, but I doubt I would buy another Optiquest because of that.

I also don't care for widescreen monitors, but I guess that's another topic.

you would'nt say that if you'd seen this 28" wide screen dirt...
deep lustrous blacks, vivid colours... and the scale of the thing is just... wow!... you could view a whole exploded view/schematic drawing without having to scroll at all...

How do you mean? Is it just an awesome 16:9 monitor or is it an awesome 16:9 Optiquest monitor?

I do some digital artwork and prefer a screen that is fairly tall as well as wide, hence my preference for a 4:3 screen. There is nothing wrong with the picture or color quality of my Optiquest, it just has a junky power circuit.

It is an awesome 16:9 man... at 28" wide the aspect ratio makes for a plenty tall screen...
You were saying you did'nt like wide screens... I was saying if you saw this one you might change you mind is all lol...

Like others, I only order from newegg.com, frys.com, and tigerdirect.com. I have a Frys fairly close to me down in Plano, Texas so sometimes I buy at the store but the other two sites usually have better prices. I have bought several things (not a monitor) "factory refurbished" and have had good luck with them and they are cheaper. I have a 22" Soyo widescreen LCD and it has been great so far (about a year). I also use a cheap little A-B switch to switch views between two computers so I only need one monitor. (Useless information---> all of my computers run Ubuntu Linux.)

Newegg.com is one of my favorites. Their service is top notch and prices are always good...but I'm also guilty of using their site as a resource and then usually find what I want for less on ebay.

Also research www.ocforums.com and www.computerforum.com for reviews and recommendations.

Viewsonic monitors are some of the best.
I've been using my VX2035wm for about 3 years and still enjoy it as much as the day I bought it. It displays and performs videos, text, gaming, anything with amazing detail and color.
