How much longer for XP OEM installs?

I need a new laptop and will stick with XP, but have read conflicting info on just when it goes away from OEM computer manufacturers. Any solid date for certain when it's done?

As far as I know XP is no longer available at all on OEMs... you can get Vista removed and XP pro installed by your techie but they have to download it from a non MS source on the web.

Dell still offers the 'Vista downgrade to XP Pro' option on business laptops. I have it on my Latitude D630 and it came with both discs (Vista Ultimate & XP Pro). I have them both installed on my D630 and it works great.

Not true. We have 30+ legal licenses of MS XP Pro + Media Center available, which we just bought a week ago.

We are considered "OEM" because we build custom computers. The installation is the same on every disc, its the Key that is different.

Lenovo still puts XP Pro + Vista Biz.

Also sooner the better. Order that laptop NOW!

I also think that some of the smaller new netbooks come with XP, as they do not meet the HP needs of Vista.

I have Vista on my Dell Inspiron 1720, and I do not care for it that much.
I like XP Pro much better that I have on my old gaming tower, and my new gaming tower I built a few Xmas's back.

I hate the nag screen with Vista for when you want to do stuff, and it tells you need admin rights.
Dagnabbit, I am the admin of my laptop.
I can do stuff after I click OK, but some stuff it will not let you do.

Windows 7 is going to be much better than Vista from what I have been reading up on in CPU magazine.

Corey,

turn off your UAC :

From http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm
Quote:
1. Launch MSCONFIG by from the Run menu.
2. Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAC" . Click on that line.
MSCONFIG - Disable Account Protection
3. Press the Launch button.
4. A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.
5. Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

You can re-enable UAC by selecting the "Enable UAC" line and then clicking on the Launch button.
Vista will give a constant security warning message on the bottom of your screen, but you can turn that off also.

First thing I do when I install vista, for the rest I really like it and has treated me very well. I love the snipping tool for quickly copying a part of the screen when necessary. Easy for quoting stuff in emails etc.

I also downloaded the Windows 7 RC and am running it on my laptop. No complaints sofar, and UAC can be configured how secure you want it to run. Nice improvement.

Thanks Arjan.
Last time when I first got it I disabled it a different way, and I had no messages at anytime.

But after I formatted it this past Christmas, I read up more on it and somewhere it said it could do more damage than good, so I never got around to disabling it.

But I will give it a shot your way, but I do not want that other message to pop up.

Oh, and yesternight after I installed a newer version of Spysweeper, I keep apps like that and AVG in a subfolder called Security under all the program apps on the Start menu.

But Spysweeper by default makes a new folder outside of mine.
So I copied the new one to my security folder, then when I went to delete the new one, Vista said only an admin can do that, and only my account is setup on the dang machine as admin.
I could not delete the folder.

I will never run Vista on another computer or laptop again.
next build I will try Windows 7 perhaps once they get all their drivers down pat.
But I am not ready to build a new gaming rig for a few years yet.
Mine is plenty fast, and plays any game at max settings.

The pop up warning you can get rid of by going
Control Panel -> Security Settings -> Change the way Security center alerts me -> Don't notify me.

It basically turns of all warnings, but since my system in on all the time anyway, things update automatically. I also check every so often to see if Avira is running etc.

I actually have the 64 bit versions of Vista Ultimate and now Windows 7. I like them both. I dual boot XP, Vista, and Windows 7 on my laptop now, but only use XP for programming PLCs (small computers that control industrial equipment).

My desktop has Vista 64 Ultimate also, I like the look and feel a lot better. It has the same CPU as yours I recall (modelled my machine after yours last year, 3ghz duo core, 1066mhz bus)
I don't play games, so I can waste the extra horsepower on pretty things like the desktop gadgets etc.

My laptop is an HP business model... love the 17" screen but hate that there is only one speaker on board and it is crappy too... wish I'd gone for the other 17" media laptop they had at the time and ate the cost of finding a downgrade to XP Pro... oh well next time... that and the *(%@# backspace button is coming loose on it too... I tend to use it when editing and correcting myself...

Thanks Arjan, it worked!
I opted to have the icon show, but I think I will turn that off too, as it has to load in memory each boot up.

No more nag screen!
